Should my N80 be set to GSM, UMTS or dual?

I notice that occasionally, when on my desk, my phone is showing 3G.

On my old phones I noticed that they switched between about 6 masts on a random basis. Lately, the mast ID's are not shown continuously, but, as my signal strength varies form 0 to 4 bars, I suspect that it is still switching between masts.

Is there any way in which I can disply details of the signal?

My signal has always (for the last 10 years) been marginal when working from my desk (Meadowridge, Cape Town).
 
IMO it is best to set it to dual - the best available signal will be used. If you set it to UMTS and you go outside 3g coverage you will have no network service.

I found this out after playing with the setting after my post. dialling 100 worked only about 10% of the time with the occassional loss of signal in the middle of a call.

Obviously the 3G mast in my area is not producing a strong enough signal here.
 
If you're not using your phone for downloading any data, then best is to set it to GSM only. You will get a few days extra battery life this way.
 
I used to set it to Dual without getting any problems. BUT Virginia that small town in the Free State is now also 3G and for some reason when I enable 3G on my phone and try to phone from here (Centurion) I get a connection error and can't phone to that person.

I suspect it might be that the person I'm trying to phone has an outdated sim or something odd but when I change back to GSM only I can make the call.

Yip good advice, esp with the bad batt of the N80.

When you switch to 3G and you make any call does it give you that error?

How many barrs do you have when you switch it to 3G only?

Only that one number I know off and only since Virginia got 3G.

And I can't switch to 3G only with the phone (the E220 can though and then it is much weaker).
