Use of cell overseas

My daughter went to America but could not use her SA cellphone there and had to buy a new one. When she came back, her American one can't work here.
She now wants to go to France and England. Does that mean she has to purchase new ones there?

England, and afaik France, uses the same GSM band as SA so her local phone should work as long as roaming has been enabled.

With the high cost of roaming charges it might be a better idea for her to get local pay-as-you-go sim cards overseas esp if she is going to be making local calls.
 
most phones sold in sa are dual band (meaning they work on 900/1800mhz networks)
afaik, dual band phones will work in most european countries.

the usa, however, uses 1900mhz (and also 850mhz), and so you need a tri-band phone (900/1800/1900mhz) for it to work over there.

kinda confusing, i know, but hope that made sense :)

If she's buying a phone again she should get a Dual band phone...
Works al over the world. But yes her local phone will work in the UK.

A dual band phone wont work everywhere - iirc countries such as the US, Canada and parts of South America use a third band (1900mhz).

For a more comprehensive global roaming I'd suggest a tri-band model.
 
While we're on the subject, does anyone know whether a SA-sourced phone (Nokia 6600) and 3G data card will work in New Zealand with one of their local SIM cards? And does anyone know anything about prepaid data there? The Voda NZ website makes no reference to data on prepaid, only contract (which obviously doesn't work for visitors). Thankx!

This phone is Quad band.

Note that Quad band phones works on the following bands.

GSM 850
GSM 900
GSM 1800
GSM 1900

Tha's why it's called quad band.

That cool I'll keep it in mind for next time I get a phone - but you suggested getting a Dual Band
