I currently have my eye on a block of flats which one of my friends stay in which is easily visible from the points that require connecting. Unfortunately they all lie around the building so i need an antennae which can receive from 360 degrees. Some one gave me advice to get the rb112 with two mini pci cards and 2 sectors. only need +- 180 degrees for now as im just going to test the system before i invest.

The thing is that sectors are a bit too out of my price range and am wondering what other alternative antennae can i use to achieve the desirable angle. The only thing i can think of is an omni but many people have nothing good to say about these antennae's ( why exactly dont many people like omni's?)

Should i just fork out and get the sectors?

One sector does not cost much more than a Omni. Poynting has just brought out a very good 11dBi Omni that might help out in this application. A sector will however be a better idea as it can take allot more clients.

Much more?
The sector i was looking at was R1200 presumable excl. vat whereas a 12dbi omni was only bout R650.

Well more clients is good. How much more can a sector take with comparison to an omni cos im only looking at connecting bout 6 people.

watch out using RB112's - their processors can't handle more than a few clients (5 or so) connected at any one time...

hey, well thats news to my ear. Not really clued up with the gear. Someone just advised me on it as i need to cover a 360 degree area which means i might need to use 2 cards with an antenna on each. If not the rb112 then what would you recommend in a situation like this where apprx. 6 ppl will need to get access?

Thanks for the input :D

RB532 FTW!!!!

PC Router FTW!!! :D

Do you have a site of a supplier where i can view the specs? rb532 way too expensive i mean if i could afford that i would never be looking for a cheaper alternative to a sector... which comes to think of it hasnt really been answered

A PC Router is merely an old PC (Pentium1, PentiumIII - whatever) that u convert into a router! You would obviously need to add a wireless radio to it, which we achieve by purchasing a PCI Convertor card, containing mini-pci slots. It is then easy to add seperate mini-pci radio's for each link that the PC is responsible for.

Then you need to install a suitable OS - Mikrotik (Need to purchase a license) or you can choose from several versions of Linux!

I alway wondered how you get power to a PC router sitting on your roof. PC's cant handle POE can they?

Never heard of POE for a PC

If you dont have an old PC and also need to buy the PCI converter card plus the SR5 or similar wireless cards it might end up costing you the same as a RB.

That would actually be quite sweet but as you said if i have none of the stuff ( got frustrated with my old pc cos it started giving me hastles so took the MB outside and beat it till i could beat it no more :( ) very stupid now that things actually turn out i might need it. Oh well guess the rb will have to do wich just means my plans will have to wait.

Thanks anyways

Great idea - old computer with 10m coaxial cable running to roof with omni antenna and some amplifiers??

Personally I really cannot think of a worse scenario - this one takes it!

Who mentioned 10m of coax? Who mentioned amplifiers? Who mentioned Omni's? We are not your average WISP, flooding the spectrum with unecessary interference by utilising Amplifiers and Omni's.

I suggest you get your facts straight before you make these kinds of assumptions. We do NOT use amplifiers, period. We do NOT use Omni antenna, and we do NOT use unecessary cable lengths. These PC Routers are installed in custom designed weather proof enclosures and mounted at the top of Towers where possible.

You obviously have NO idea whatsoever as to what Jawug is all about. I suggest you search this forum for Jawug, and do a bit more homework for the next time you want to make a post such as this!
