Hi guys,
I've been over this forum and many others looking for help... I've used most everything I've seen around, and still no luck !@$%^
Description of my problem:
* I manage to get past the gray 'ArenaNet' login screen
* Login to my account no problem
* Select my character and press play, on the next screen it gets stuck on 'Connecting...' ... After a looong wait it comes up with a 007 Error (Lost internet connection error)
I've setup port forwarding on my Router for ports 80 and 6112...
I've turned off both the hardware and Windows XP firewalls
I don't have any virus software running to interfere
Anyone else with the Telkom Premium Router having/had this problem?
I cry out for help here ppl. I bought Factions on Saturday, and have been trying day and night to get this to work with NO LUCK :(
Any help will be appreciated!

You shouldn't need to enable port forwarding to play Guildwars. Might be worth a try to disable the port forwarding and try again.

Greets
I've run gw over:
512k dsl
virgin,mtn,voda,celc
wifi inet setup - 90k
on all of these i connected via a lan interface with a lan ip
no port forwading of any kind. virgin is my main connection at the moment.
I've also used sox proxies aswell at times.
so like Xarog says - use the defaults, should be fine then.

Thanks for the prompt replies! ;)
I have tried it without forwarding those ports and it did not work... That was when I started checking on the net for possible solutions to my problem. In this time I came across numerous sites and forum posts saying that GW needs port forwarding for those ports.
I will give it another bash without...
Any other suggestions?

And do let us know if you get the problem fixed so we can stop wracking our brains for a possible solution. ;)

if its possible to test gw on another pc on yr lan then you can better find where the source of the prob is

Oh still at it, and just tried something else...
I login and clicked "create a new character"... On this area I can see what my ping to the server is (bottom right), and it averages on 720ms...
This is really bad, does this give any clues as to what it could be?!
I ping'ed this ip 198.54.202.66 and get between 29 and 32ms replies...

@pix101
If you are on a SAIX account, make sure that the game does not communicate over port 80 as the darn transparent proxy or something causes connection problems. I had that problem until I set my firewall to deny port 80 for gw.exe. After some time, it reverted to port 6112 and all was ok.

I would also suggest a different pc or connection.
Have you tried a GW reinstall? Backup your gw.dat file first.
Otherwise, run the -image in the command prompt after gw.exe (gw.exe -image) in the GW directory to do a download and decompress of the latest game files to your gw.dat file.
Tried running a defrag perhaps?
Are you not capped perhaps? That ping doesn't sound too serious, I have had worse without any issues.
Disable all proxies and firewalls just to see if the launcher and game actually launches. Check your AV as well.

@BandwidthAddict
Now this is the first I heard of blocking port 80. How do I go about blocking port 80, and more specifically for GW only?
Thanks for this tip! I want to try it out ;)
@lilDeath
Unfortunately I do not have access to another PC...
I've tried all you suggested except for a re-install and complete download of the total GW.Dat...
If I can't fix it with the port settings which I very well think it could be, I'm getting a friends .dat. Only problem is getting as he lives on the other side of the world from me, else I would have tried that ages ago...
Thanks for the help thus far... Really hope to get to the bottom of this, SOON

Try running GW with the -diag switch. Go through the log file to see if you are even getting to the GW Servers. If you are then send the log file to GW Support.

I've done this, and have sent the log to support. To date I've only got really generic (probably auto generated) responses.
this is an extrac from my log:

I don't know anything about it but you are certainly being blocked on your own machine. It's connecting but your machine isn't allowing you access.
Realise you've switched your XP firewall off but do you have GW listed as an exception (if it is on?)
Port 80 is also suspicious because it is the local server port, for instance apache. Somewhere you have one little setting wrong, has become enabled when it should be off, blocking your access.
(of course you're not running apache or similar in the background are you?)
IOW if it is listed as an exception then windows sees your installation and should allow it to run.

Right! I finally got it working, Whooo Hooo!! :D
My persistence paid off...
For anyone with the same problem I've had here is what I did:
I various places including PlayNC support it is mentioned that ports 6112 and 80 should be open. I did this as many people have suggested by setting it up with NAT config on the router. This did not work...
On this router of mine (Telkom Premium Combo Router 512ADSL) there is further Security settings you can change and add to under the Firewall called "Security Policy Configuration"
In here you have to click on "Port Filters" for the default for "external internal".
Enter port 6112 and allow "Inbound Outbound" as true... do the same with port 80...
Done!
Ok, let me go game a bit ;)
thanks for the help everyone who contributed to this thread!

It's def a firewall issue where the traffic cannot come back to your PC.
Perhaps enable DMZ on your router briefly to test if traffic is successfully coming back? The prob with the dx -diag is it doesnt test the return path.
Anyway ... i'm rambling :)
Try enable DMZ on the router briefly, drop your PC Firewall software as well as Windows default firewall proggy and try to connect.

Whooohooo fixed the problem !!!!:D
This is the cause of the problem:
(One of my guildies actually solved this, so thanks to him)
Telkom put in a transparent proxy to the adsl service, GW by default connects via port 80, so the proxy screwes with the traffic on port 80, in order to fix this you must force GW to connect and use port 6112, this is done by using a personal firewall and blocking all communication on port 80 for GW.exe and allowing communication on port 6112 (for GW.exe).
I used Comodo Firewall Pro (freeware) to do this and it works fine
