Telkom’s international bandwidth monopoly may be gone soon

Nothing concrete yet though, hopefully they'll get access to SAT3, can
Telkom really deny it to them considering they own a portion of it?
 
Am I reading this wrong or is Neotel saying even if they do get access Telkom still have control of the outgoing half?, or is that how it is now?:confused:
 
This SAT3 option will be the fastest way for Neotel to compete on equal footing with Telkom in the international bandwidth space, but Neotel have other plans in place if this does not materialize.

Who exactly decides whether Neotel gets access to SAT3 or not...ICASA, the corruptment or DOC?
 
Neotel the VSNL actually have a slightly bigger stake in SAT-3 than Telkom if memory serves me correctly.

It will be interesting to see how the government handles this issue.
Honestly though, I think we can expect more of this managed liberalization BS to keep on protecting TELKOM, and that only when their are alternative cables will we see any meaningful shift in access and pricing.
 
If the inbound data is so much cheaper, why cant we just get cheap internet connections with noe outbound data? Why cant someone just sell cheap internet browsing?

You still have to send a small amount of outbound data even for browsing, it wouldn't come to much of the total though.
 
The first option is to compete head on with Telkom on SAT3 when their exclusivity to carrying outbound traffic from South Africa on this cable ends.

Yes... I realized that, but surely local traffic does not have to go via SAT3. So can someone please sell us a very low internet package with no international connectivity. That would be great for business and general communications. We could all VOIP each other. VPN would also be musch cheaper. All problems solved. What am I missing?

You can already get a 30GB Local Only account from Openweb for about R140

Well you still have to pay the ADSL line rental. Also most businesses need at least some international connectivity, although you can always set up Routesentry etc. but I suppose most bigger businesses use either Diginet or uncapped ADSL so its irrelevant.

When using Skype between 2 PCs or skype phones in SA, do you need international bandwith? (I think yes)

Does anyone know of another way?

AFAIK yes but only to initiate the connection (although this might not be the case if you're connected to a local supernode) - once the call connects it is p2p.

As for another way - I have a 1gb payg account that I used exclusively for skype and it has lasted me months with moderate to heavy use. I also dont use the video so that helps keep the traffic to a minimum.

There are several companies offering this kind of service already. Setting up such a service is not too difficult. Check out Asterisk PBX and you will find an open source SIP server that does just that.
 
Is it just me, or have we already seen time creep on Telkom's exclusivity rights? Initial reports stated it as running out in January 2007, then it was February 2007, then it moved to March 2007, and now it seems to be April 2007.

I'm guessing, but from now on it is likely to always be in 2 to 3 months time.

AKA Imminent.
