Who is throttling IS News traffic???

Ok... Who is throttling IS news traffic... is it Openweb or IS?
Their news servers give me around 13-19kb per second while their FTP server gives me 400+kb per second....

THEN SUDDENLY...

while watching a download, I noticed the speed suddenly spike to 90-100k per second for a few minutes (consistent) for a few minutes then back down to the normal old speed... here is a screenshot...

who knows why it is throttled? (And don't try to tell me that suddenly a whole bunch of users jumped off then back on)...
I mean... 15k per second on a 4 meg line with an IS account to an IS server...!
 
It seems to be the international bandwidth that's being throttled. I downloaded something that was cached at 230kb/s as soon as I went to something that had to be fetched internationally it dropped to 15kb/s, also on a 4 meg line with IS uncapped.

Openweb don't handle capping or throttling etc. that's all done by IS.

Agreed; for one thing I get the exact same behaviour with an IS account resold by WA --- so it's probably IS, not the resellers.

Unlike with SAIX the resellers have no control over the accounts once they're sold.

Where does international bandwidth come into this?
I am using local only and am accessing local sites right in the IS server farm with an IS account - or am i mistaken? In fact with the FTP server hardware I get 400k per second with may even reside in the same room...?
news.isdsl.net = 196.26.208.123
ftp.is.co.za = 196.4.160.12

If what you're downloading has been downloaded locally by someone else IS generally have it cached on their server. Otherwise the IS news server downloads it internationally on your behalf and then you download it locally from there with local bandwidth.
 
can i ask you something which i find strange


lets say on average their are 1000 openweb users using the news server download 30 gig a month

thats 30000 gigs of information where in hell is IS storing this information?

you would 30 terabyte hard drive to cache all of that info?

i dont think they cache alot

are my calculations out?

You're not taking into account that a lot of people will be downloading the same things so the actual amount of unique downloads will be much less - that's what caching is all about.

sorry to be blunt but if you're on uncapped wtf are you bothering with the local news servers for? :confused:

News servers are quite large machines, sometimes more than 26 servers connected running huge raid arrays.

I just tried it out yesterday for the first time. Came to the conclusion its worthwhile for cached stuff, for everything else I'll stick with international torrents. :)
 
Excuse me whilst i fsck out from hearing "IS uncapped" and "stick to international torrents" in the same sentence. *sighs*

Some people never learn
 
lol i found int. torrents kill your cap so much quicker than local news server

Sigh . . .torrents are sooooo last year.

I was happiest when I was uncapped and could take full advantage of what easynews had to offer :) - No broken downloads, no MPAA plants, full speed all the time without having to worry about ratios . . . :(

I only use them when I'm on holiday, otherwise I have access to *cough* other sources *cough* where my usual download speed is 6Mb/s :D
 
LoL, 6mbit is nothing. My secret connection gets me 12-14mbit speeds :)
