Internet Usage Monitoring on a LAN - how to monitor

So guys, I have a small problem here....

I have 10 engineers reporting to me and there is misuse of the internet account in my department.

Current setup is :

1. We are all hooked up to the company's server.
2. Each person has their own internet connection via the LAN.
3. We pay I.T. for the number of MB surfed/downloaded (similar to mobile data bundles).
4. I get report of each engineer's usage at month-end. But this is too late cos the damage has been done.

Requirement:

1. Each person must be able to view their real-time usage of the internet (MB used).
2. Because of confidentiality issues/policies it is a major schelp to request detail analysis of the sites each user visited.


So which program (preferably freeware) can I off them to monitor their usage so that they stick to the limit?

I tried DU Meter but it gives me an incorrect reading since it includes the data exchanged for other work as well eg. SAP usage, getting PDF's from the library, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why not do it straight from the server?

You won't be violating privacy if you just get the IT blokes to do it. They can send each user statistics every month. Nice and simple.

If you're using a proxy server it should keep logs. Logs can be analysed to show times, amount etc classified by IP or hostname.

Find out what proxy server they're using. If it's squid or ISA it should be easy.

As I mentioned in my requirements paragraph, I am seeking real-time usage.

We do get stats on a monthly basis. This is after the fact ... the guys have overspent already.

Also our company is 1000 personnel strong with a small IT depatment servicing it.


At home I use DU Meter and it works great.... it tells me how many MB was uploaded and downloaded. I would like something like this.
