It would be daft of them not to do it. They should also bump up all the bottom ranging services and finally come out with a flatrated dialup service to get local Internet moving.

I get the funny idea that Telkom is bumping up their ADSL speeds in an attempt to justify their high prices.

So Telkom is rather predictably pricing to deny Neotel market space.
They know that the CDMA last mile will bottleneck the Neotel broadband to about half the speed of 4mbps. Together with their stranglehold on SAT3 Neotel will struggle to offer competitive data services.
Looks like there is no chance of any change to the DSL384 and DSL512 packages, particularly with the minimum speed for 4mbps now pegged at 640kbps and the slowest band of the step down being effectively the "old" DSL1024.
Doesn't look like there will be any discounts if you sync at the slower speeds either.
Someone pass the vaseline - looks like we're set to be reamed for another 2 to 3 years.

True. If Telkom doesn't start dropping per gig bandwidth charges and only increase download speeds it is pretty useless to the economy.
It is kinda like saying you can drive 300km/h on a particular road but the road is only 20 meters long.

I have a 512Kb line but I wonder since my distance to the Exchange is
around 4 Km so anybody out there know if 4096 could work on such a distance? my 512 seems to be fine. Are there any place to look it up?

It could work.
The dynamics of line quality etc will play a significant role, but all the speed upgrades and different DSL versions have been done taking into consideration strenuous line conditions. I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanx I might try an upgrade , but first see what will happen after Feb.
Telkom are shifting their products to an "up to" basis it would seem.
I am on 4meg, and it's all BS really, as I hardly ever get close to 4Meg - I get bursts of 4meg, but that's it - never anything consistent. In fact, I don't see consistent speeds even near 1meg.

Or you can drive 300km/h as long as you don't mind paying R200/l for the petrol.
Based on SA pricing we are paying R200 per km no matter how fast you drive.
Actually its worse than that, we're paying R200/km and then an additional charge the faster you drive [line rental].

Ditto... I see another "you're getting more for the same price" fiasco on the horizon. Not that I want to seem ungrateful, but personally I'd still rather have my 192kbps service at half the price that I was paying for it than a 384kbps service at the same price...
I don't want and I don't need 512kpbs... I just want to pay R300 per month for a 384kbps Closer plan...

what about people who just want a 1mbit or 2 mbit service? Telkom are basically saying that you have to get the fastest and then based on your distance, it will sync at the best possible speed, fingers crossed it's at the speed you want at least.
Our basket of products we have a choice are Super Slow (384), Slow (512) or Lightning Fast - in SA terms (4096). What sense does that make?

You are so correct... from that clause it seems as you will pay for a 4Mbit line yet you MIGHT not get it... and personally I am connected with iburst and that is their policy you get a UP TO 1Mbps connection if you have **** connection then you might end up with less than 50kbps connection instead of the 1Mbps... so if I sign up with this telkom and pay for the UP TO 4Mbps what's the guarentee that I will have 4Mbps? maybe they decide to give you a minimum of 640kbps...
