Saw M-Web offering this new service and just thought I'd put it out to the forum to get some feedback.

Is it worth using ? or will it only cause further problems ?

How does it actually work ?

My ADSL - ADSL Protected Access – NEW!
This service limits potentially harmful incoming Internet traffic to your computer. Protected access is highly recommended for your own online safety.

Protected access will prevent the following:

1. All HTTP connections originating from the Internet towards your PC.
2. All TELNET connections originating from the Internet towards your PC.
3. All connections originating from the Internet towards your PC on TCP ports 254 and 255.

Click the ENABLE PROTECTED ACCESS link below. Please note that you will need to reconnect to the Internet for this service to take effect.
 
Um .. sounds entirely useless.

HTTP and Telnet on your PC will only be on if you specifically enabled them, unless they're talking about protecting your router which will sometimes allow remote access.

Nothing runs on ports 254 or 255 at all so I have absolutely no idea what they're trying to achieve there.

If they were actually trying to protect you from exploits they'd be better off blocking ports 137, 139 and 445, which are the ports most often exploited.
 
Well I've always thought an ISP based firewall would be a good idea since there's no way you'd ever want connections coming in on certain ports (ones mentioned above), as long as you can switch it off if for whatever reason you do.

But as I said, no idea what they're trying to do with the items listed.

There is a well known exploit on port's 254 & 255 on certain adsl modems. Major factor in password theft.

They are just copying the Axxess vIP Secure service. Which I must add is free with all Axxess ADSL accounts. Why pay for it :D
