I've always been a Nokia guy, since the days when the 5110 was considered cutting edge (actually mine still works 100%).

Last year I got an upgrade to the Nokia N80 thinking I was onto the hottest thing since the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee vacation video, but my joy was short-lived once I started using the phone.

This is not your traditional friendly Nokia cellphone. In fact its convoluted menu system makes even the worst Motorola phone look as friendly as Desmond Tutu on anti-depressants! It's a terrible phone and to make matters worse, it has got some serious problems that affect usability (that is if you wish to venture into the world of Bluetooth or Wireless LAN).

Within two weeks of getting my phone I started having problems with the Bluetooth connection. I had it set up to synch with my Windows laptop running XP Home and PC Suite, plus my CK-7 car kit. for no apparent reason the phone would drop the bluetooth signal, so you'd be driving along and the next thing the radio would mute and the phone would disconnect. when starting the car the Bluetooth would connect and disconnect at least half a dozen times before you even got into first gear. My previous Nokia (the 6230) gave me no problems in this regard.

In December I had had enough and finally got around to taking the phone back to Nashua here in Durban. They told me that Nokia had shut down the Durban repair centre and now all phones had to be sent to Johannesburg for repairs. Two weeks maximum turnaround they said.

Well, its been almost 6 weeks now and everytime I call Nashua they tell me that there is a problem with Nokia service centre in JHB. Apparently they are backed up to the eyeballs with repairs to these Nokia N-series phones.

I pay a monthly subscription of over R650 for my two cellphone contracts and to be perfectly honest, I am losing faith in not only Nokia, but also Nashua for their inability to assume responsibility for these "carrots" that they dangle in front of us to get us to sign 2-year contracts with them.

I will certainly think twice before signing a contract ever again and I most certainly will never consider a Nokia N-series phone ever again!

MY Dad's first N70 just won't want to start up, white screen. Called NASHUA JHB and they promised someone will come pick up and swap out a new one, which they didn't. Called again and again and was told can't swap because it's over 7 or 14 days (and who's fault is it?). Complain and complain and a new phone was delivered, and it's a working one.......N70 white screen on boot=common problem.....maybe too smart???
Luckily I am using Windows Mobile based PPC

Yep, can you believe that there is only one service centre in the country? And they sold a 100 000 phones is SA last year! Nokia gave the service contract to Exactmobile:sick: !!!

To get a firmware upgrade these days your phone has to go to jo'burg for a minimum of 2 weeks! That has got to be some of the worst customer service i've ever seen. Pity too, 'cause they do make some good phones.

I have a big issue with the local Nokia distributor (RF Group?) who are closing down service centers (Durban, Cape Town) and outsourcing or referring to a low rent crowd like Exact Mobile. Nokia Finland should step in here: This really gives Nokia a bad name.

Symbian is complex, but you get used to it and it has a few major advantages as a fully fledged multi tasking operating system. Choose a series 40 phone is you need a simple reliable solution.

The N80 appears to be buggy, but a firmware upgrade (www.nokia.co.uk) may help!

Gavin Penkin has been a thorn in my side since I had a 6110 and he was still with RF Group. No he is with Exactmobile and a pain in everyones ass.

N95 ........ maybe not !

Firmware on the newer Nokia's can be done from the web using the USB sync cable supplied. The same rule applies to the newer Sony Ericsson modules where you can actually do it from the phone directly.

hahaha you think so?? hehe not while nokia refuses to pull its finger out of that place that dont smell so good ;) and get the upgraded firmware version uploaded for you particular model of phone, unless ofcourse you want to flash your phone, change the product code, and lose your warranty in the process..

i dont think so..

they really could have stepped up service here but 100 000 phones is nothing compared to the units sold in the far east, europe, etc.. i guess we're just too small a fish for them to bother with, hence we were "tossed" back into the sea and left at the mercies of sharks (leeches??) like the "eggshacktmobiles" of the world...

Damn, I'm hoping the N76 doesn't have the same problems when it is released...
Was looking to get that in a few months time...

I have succesfully done this on the 6280, 6680, N70 and N90 without losing my warranties. The firmware versions are upgraded bi-weekly.

thats coz your not using an N73 or N80, on the older phones the software is readily available, therefore you didnt need to flash the phones, and the warranties were not voided ;)

as i said, nokia needs to pull its finger ;)

It seems as if bad service in SA is just something big companies don't worry about. Since nobody is offering anything resembling good service they don't have to compete with it.

I think Nokio cant keep up with all their irate customers... and they have alot, especially N-series users.... shame:D

Beh.

My N80 still works flawlessly. No problems, no issues, no worries. I upgraded the firmware because I felt like it and it worked over the air with no problems.

It plays MP3s, RM files, works with my Gmail, my WILAN both at work and home, bluetooth headset. Hell, it even plugs into my car and gives me excellent radio reception.

The menus are pretty much straightforward and are snappy. I can't help but feel that if you're having issues with menu complexity you should maybe not be using a smartphone.

As a small added bonus the damned thing is unkillable. It's been dropped from dizzy heights (I'm accident prone) and the casing remains unscratched and unmarked.

I'll agree with the battery life as I'd like to not have to charge my phone every night but on the other hand, how much effort is it to do that?

I've never had problems with any of the Nokias I've owned. Not one.

In comparison, I've had problems with the following brands: Motorola, Sagem, Sony Ericcson, Phillips, LG.

I say again... beh.
