Hi all

On varsity I also have access to internet, but the sites and ports are limited. No http porn, music, warez, serial sites is allowed.

Heard that paid newsservers can be used because you can download files via DAP (download accelarator) or something similar.
Like to know a few things

1) What news servers allow DAP downloads? Not through ports that is blocked?
2) The credit card details - Does the rands get converted to dollars automatically? If that a problem.
3) if I cancel a service from them, do they stop the deductions from my credit card?
4) How can i test an paid server, to see if it will work, before I give any credit card details?

I can ask them this, but would like to here some of the users opinion.

Thanks for helping out.

Niemand wil jou help nie Kiepie! :D ;)

Most of the paid news servers have 3 day trials etc. giganews and so on, but you have to give them ccard details, it sucks, but that's how it works.

Best to ask the guys which paid news servers are the best, ask bwana etc.

;)

I use http://www.easynews.com/

They offer a 1 week / 1GB REFUND trial.

Speed is good 350KB/s -400KB/s on my adsl 4mbps.

Cost $10 (R73 automatically converted) per month for 30 days / 20GB.

Earn 4GB per month for online survey and World Community Grid's Easynews team.

Use GRABIT on port 119 (32 simultaneous connections) to download content.

You'll need a news server that allows HTTP downloads, those definitely won't be blocked. Not sure which do though.

easynews does - a huge number of connections with a download accelerator over port 80 or 81. I've used 45+ when I was with uunet.

"EasyNews uses NNTPS - secure NNTP, and HTTPS - secure HTTP (over SSL). Their Web Server contains every file posted to every Usenet newsgroup in the last 40 days. That's over 8 million files with hundreds of thousands of new files every day. Bulk downloads are made easy with our Zip Manager. Put all your files into one easy to download zip file. The web site also listens on port 81 to bypass broken web cache/proxy servers at your work or ISP."

They seem to be the best option, hopefully you've got an uncapped connection! ;)

Easynews rocks - I have been a subscriber for many years now!
did you notice the new loyalty bonus? One free gb per billing cycle for every year's membership. :D
