MTNDD,

I'm not sure if this has been dealt with in another thread already but here goes anyway....

Do you know if the Samsung SGH-i600 is going to be available in SA anytime soon? Is MTN currently testing this device? First impression is that it seems like a nice phone.
Features include:
  • HSDPA
  • Wifi
  • QWERTY keyboard
  • Slim design
  • Quad band
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • etc.

It appears to be the upgrade on the SGH-i320 that is currently available on MTN contracts.

The phone was released in the USA in Q4 06. Check out the US site:
Samsung Blackjack

Does anyone else have experience with or an opinion on this handset?

Good day,

This device is being tested at the moment. My opinion the I320's keyboard was a little difficult to work with and I wasn't happy with the battery life on the device. The I600 is a very nice looking device seems very solid very nice UI with the track wheel on the right hand side - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Viewer all and all I'm considering it over the Nokia N95 for now and then when the N95 comes out I'll use the I600 as my primary device and the N95 as my GPS Device and my E220 as my Data device. But all in all I would say the I600 is a really nice looking device and a pleasure to operate

I had the pleasure of playing with one for a couple of minutes

Release date

MTNDD, thanks for the positive feedback.

I know pigs fly, but do you know when the testing might come to an end and when the device will be available on an MTN contract?

Why would you prefer this over a TyTn?

Who you talking to?

Well it's smaller it's got a nicer user interface and it's just a lot more user friendly and it didn't freeze up or crash and with the active sync there's one set up you go into active sync put in the settings and off you go

Computer SA mag rated the i600 as their favourite smartphone in the current edition. ....just FYI

Why does it always take SA so long to release new phones on the market.
The Samsung SGH-i600 was released last year December overseas, and we are only going to get it in April / May 07 if we are lucky.

What sort of tests do they need to do on the phone ? Surely Cellphone Networks are very similar across the world ?

I can't answer that but will advise ASAP

Testing takes about 3 months from the time they recieve it, everything should work.
Sometimes the prototypes are up to scratch and they need new ones, so it takes longer.
But all in all they test everything, if it cant send a "please call me" it fails.:p

Here is the feedback from Midrand

Networks are not similar across the world, their range is just vast, what work someone else does not guarantees us it work here, secondly there is third party involved.. The SIM, and we ensure all jell and work together well. Thirdly when the phone is launched in December it does not mean we get it same time, just like any other product that is launched in Europe, there is a delay of time to reach our shores.

So yes some time it looks delayed for extended times, but it is for the best…. there are various external factors that are beyond our control, and we try to expedite the validation process to the best of our abilities. It will be the same customers who may complain if the phone does not work as it should.

Okay cool - so we will just need to wait for MTN to release the phone. Hopefully they will release it before Vodacom does - cause to be honest with you I want that phone as I can see it helping me with my business and I will gladly switch over to the first provider that releases it.

yah, same way I felt about my TyTn. MTN is usually the quickest, but VC beat them by a coupla weeks on the TyTn. Turned out that the MTN pay-in for the phone was over a grand cheaper though. And I'll wait 2 weeks and save myself a thousand bucks any day.

@speed_freak

Well let's hope Midrand get this out before VC

Release date update?

Any further news on when the SGH-i600 will be available?

Will we have to pay in on ProCall 120?
