DTSV question: USB on back of PVR

Anybody here know what the USB plug on back of PVR can do? Would I be able to access the HDD for instance?
 
Apparently the data on the hard drive is encrypted so I don't think so, not sure what its function is.
 
My entirely uneducated guess would be for nothing currently.

However you may one day be able to attach modem or keyboard to your PVR.

Possibly also for the technicians to attach their computers to it and fix the thing?

The USB ports aren't enabled at present and it's likely to stay that way. The only reason the ports exist at all is due to the fact the processor provided integrated USB support and it was thus decided to add the USB ports for possible future use.

Current usage for the USB ports are for 2 USB memory sticks - stick one in front and one at the back and you have a high tech handle to pick the PVR up with.

To also add to TivoSA's comments - the USB ports are version 1 so they will be basically useless if ever enabled.

USB 1 is a bit slow but it doesn't prevent the PVR from being able to act as a media server with streaming, uploading and downloading facilities as well as adding the ability to view pictures and play music.

Although the content owners are preventing MCA from allowing the recordings to be downloaded from the PVR, there is nothing stopping MCA from allowing videos to be uploaded to the PVR :D

I elaborated a little more on the above points in the "USB Port" thread on the DSTV forum but their didn't seem to be much interest.

They are designed for data transfer but since the processor is a little dated, it only supports USB 1.
