ICASA gives its views on the high cost of mobile services

Same saga as the adsl one. More submissions, more parties and one year later 5 pages of grade 1 findings.

As consumers we should get ICASA closed down. Certainly no regulation is better than this bunch of morons, which get paid exorbitant fees only to protect the interest of Telkom and Multichoice. The only time that they can enforce regulations is when they tackle small fry in favour of the big guns.

Also at the moment they are preventing smaller companies from starting up in niche markets, by licensing just about everything on a national scale, thus making the start up just too expensive!

If smaller companies could start on a town/city suburb level there would be many more players in the mix, and the good small ones will soon become national.

The Authority has published their findings stating that they need to investigate certain matters further in accordance with the ECA and need to reexamine the framework for establishing mobile tariffs.
I'm amazed that ICASA had the time to pull their fingers out of their ar$es long enough to promise to take another 9 months "investigate". Let the talking roll on.
ICASA said that they will publish a discussion document on or before the 31st of January 2007 soliciting written responses to this effect.

ICASA also stated that they need to ‘define relevant market segments’ to establish whether there is true competition in this sector. The public will be asked to comment on this matter, also on or before the 31st of January 2007.

It is interesting that the finding were only published on the 1st of February, later than what the document suggests as a deadline for soliciting comments on this issue from the public
To paraphrase RPM - I can save them a whole bunch of research money - you only have to look at the uniform pricing across the carriers to see that their is no competition. If that isn't enough then the findings of collusion on pricing from a few years ago tells the story.
Good to see that ICASA has perfected time travel as well.;)

Maybe we really do need to bring back the death penalty. For ineffectual regulators.
