Next Generation fixed line networks, 3G and the upgraded Internet/web

Most of the mobile cellular and fixed line networks have started to deploy 3G and NGN( next generation networks).
Both consist of an IP transport with IMS ( IP Multimedia subsystem). The IMS includes SIP ( to initiate and manage sessions) and quality of service which consists of conversational quality, interactive, streaming and "best effort". IMS also includes Diameter AAA authentication, authorisation, access control and collects data for billing. The core network would typically be SDH or even IP/DWDM direct. IP/MPLS is recommended for the core( backbone) and an NGN is agnostic with regard to access networks. It is designed to accept a number of AN standards like ADSL, ISDN, FR, ATM and WiMAX and 3G like HSDPA. PSTN via a gateway. The metro or regional networks historically were ATM on fibre but more are moving to 10gbps Ethernet fibre which is cheaper by far and has greater bandwidth. 10Gbps ethernet is also being used on the copper of the access netwotk It is in the LANs.

To get the benefit of rich realtime communications together with the Internet, and web and e-everything including entertainment and IPTV broadband is needed. So the NGN and 3G are also leading to the rollout of broadband.

If the Internet ISPs ( with ADSL on copper or Ethernet on copper) and wireless ISPs (WiFi running VoIP, WimAX running IP communicatins ( both WiFi and WiMaX ares "ethernet in the air")) and working with 3G broadband ( generally HSDPA and HSUPA) upgraded to add SIP and DIAmeter ( both Internet protocols and would fit the IP family) as well as MPLS in the core and conversational, interactive , streaming and IPTV and "best effort" they will have an NGN with less investment than the telcos who have to discrd much of their old circuit switches.

This process is happening. Thus we end up with the mobiles, cellular networks, the fixed line former telcos together with the Internet/web all running essentially the same technology. Ownership could also overlap as it does.

It is in the public's interest that all these networks interconnect and interoperate. It is also allowed for and encouraged in the Electronic communications Act.

Even though there will be a move to common technolopgy platforms there will of course still be competition. There must and it could lead to many different alliances. After all Vodacom and MTN use the same 3G/2G technology with alternative vendors,built on the same spec.

There are many possibilities Fixed line with 3G, or Internet with 3G networks, Internet with Access networks using wiMAX or ADSL or AN ethernet.

There will be a temptation for the established networks to "lock out" services and content that are not owned or approved by them. Like T-Systems of Germany tried to lock out all VoIPs. There was such an outcry in Europe that they soon gave up.

Our ECA could be interpretaed to keep the service providers, content probivers separate from the networks. The ownership will be different.

The telco defendrs say that Skype, the Internet and the web in general and Google , Kalahari are "getting a free ride" IPOd and iPhone are "piggy backing" on the telcos cable. They should build their own cable. Many ISPs would love to.

But why are the telcos able to sell broadband. Do you pay extra to have a cable for telephony. If it is not the telephony from the incumbents maybe. But we pay extra to the Telcos to get Internet, iPod, Google, and have access to 100 million pages of information and to movies, music, and cheaper communications. If the Telcos "banned" the Internet and web who would sign up for ADSL.

Who is the parasite? The services and content or the physical cables or wireless kit. The "piggy back" argument holds no water. Who uses who.?

The "they are taking a free ride " argument is currently being fought over in the USA. Generally the courts are coming out for the ISPs. Not always though.

We could have the same battle here.
