Big shake-up looms in TV sector

I think it's about time we had some competition, and with SABC being one of the proposed competitors, I don't see this following the same path as NeoTel has had to walk.

The smaller consortiums that have applied for licences are dominated by foreign players, which highlights dependence on foreigners for content and funding

Yeah...it's called foreign investment...something that will become very foreign if we don't sort out this whole telecoms mess...:(
 
"Heavyweight Sentech" ? That's an oxymoron if I ever saw one. Unless they mean heavy from all the government money that flows into it like diarrhea from a buffalo. Too heavy to get off their asses to provide decent wireless internet.

I'm sad to say most of the new entrants seem to be focusing on the same segment... the lower middle class with local programming so it seems we still wont have much choice...
 
Why the hell would anyone want to watch local television? I can't stand their insufferable mixture of English and local languages. Pick one language and stick to it! And besides, it costs like 4 times more to produce crappy local shows than to buy top-rated international shows, so it makes a lot more economic sense as well. A broadcaster showing only international shows would be much better and a lot cheaper.
 
Well, if Sentech's television service is anything like their internet......

Anybody that has accidentally flipped the channels to SABC Africa will know how utterly crap that channel is. Just because we are in africa doesn't mean we care a damn about the life of a Tanzanian Fisherman or wish to watch a baddly produced beyind low grade nigerian soap opera. The channel is mind numbing and maybe appeals to a minority who also take to watching test patterns. I for one agree with TiredOfWaiting, bring on the international programs that people actually want to watch and leave the soulless uncreative programming that is "local content" to where it is best suite i.e. SABC 1, 2 and 3.

One month I offered to pay my monthly subscription with the same cheque that I had used to pay for my previous month's account. Strange how they don't accept repeats from my side..........:p

Well, Sentech falls directly under the control of the Minister of Poverty *kof* sorry Telecoms. Poison Ivy can be considered a "heavy weight" she sure as heck is not bantam weight :D
