Sentech losing its signal as key staff sign off

Sentech was excited by plans for it to offer broadband wireless access to all citizens in a scheme designed by Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri.

Sentech would move fast as soon as funding was secured, he said.

Ok if this doesn't give some impetus to get rid of Ivy I don't know what will. The only, and I mean only, achievement the DoC has made has been the introduction of Neotel and even that was 5 years late. They have done absolutely nothing else.
 
Moreover, an executive decision to scrap a popular MyWireless option was so unpopular that almost half its customers logged off completely. That move, made against the advice of MyWireless managers, means the service now loses R1m a month.

These people are idiots. In the current environment of inflated fees for telecommunications and with Telkom and MTN/Vodacom making record profits and a population desperate for broadband, losing a million bucks a month should be financially impossible. That they managed to do it is just a testament to the idiots in charge there.
 
Sentech’s top priority is a R1bn project to digitise the national broadcasting network so the 2010 World Cup can be transmitted using digital technology. Sentech asked the communications department for R300m in 2003, R600m and a second chunk of R1,2bn in 2004, and R915m in 2005.

It received nothing until last year, when it was promised just R200m to cover three years.

Of the 110 resignations since last year, many were of skilled technicians and managers who could no longer tolerate the poor decisions and wretched atmosphere. Among them was Winston Smith, the product manager for MyWireless. Smith took abuse from consumers angry at the slow speeds and lack of coverage. He defended Sentech admirably, but it was beyond the call of duty.

I sincerely hope that this is not the last we will see & hear from Winston Smith, having said that I'm happy for him that he managed to safely abandon Sentech's MyWireless tug-boat before its imminent sinking :).

Well EKSDOM themselves are advising all stadiums have their own gennies as the risk of power failures is unacceptably high!
An Eskom report warned that the risk of power failures during matches at the 2010 Soccer World Cup was "unacceptably high".
Even a one second break in power supply to the sophisticated lighting system required by world soccer body Fifa could delay matches for between 10 and 15 minutes, a joint Eskom and AMEU (Association of Municipal Electricity Undertakings) 2010 working group has found.

The report, compiled by Eskom's Andrew Sprunt, says it is "vital" that all stadiums have their own power generators to avert huge embarrassment for South Africa.

Eskom confirmed on Sunday that it was considering such a plan.

Fifa's requirements include emergency back-up lighting systems and uninterrupted TV broadcasts of all matches.

"There is an unacceptably high probability of short power cuts or dips (in load), because of faults on the network," according to the report "Stadium Power Supplies Recommendations".

I am personally very happy for Winston Smith. I met him on more than one occasion and I can truly say that he has backbone and generally fight for what he believes in. With him gone...who knows what will happen - I am sure he'll go on to do great things where ever he has gone to.
