Local Bandwidth Caps kills Web 2.0

In other words forget about web2 in SA for now
 
I'm not sure if this is necessarily true. There are tons and tons of web-based applications out there that are not as bandwidth intensive as youtube, but still count as 'web2.0' - whatever that means in this day and age.

Bandwidth does not equate to 2.0 status. It helps, but there are tons of other factors to take into consideration. Look at digg for instance. That's definitely News 2.0, but is the app bandwidth hungry like youtube? Nope.
 
Telkom is governing ANY development of internet technology in south africa.. We wont get anywhere if they keep there hold on us... No 100mb adsl, no unlimited cap, no live HD tv streaming, NO FUTURE FOR SA!!!!!!!

In the future, the world will end up in war and then america and other places will look to us to supply them with weapons and we will go, " Here is 10 tons of Bullets and Grenades and Landmines" and they will go, " WHAT? You dont have Laser cartriges and Plasma Grenades and Nuke-mines????" and we will go, "Sorry no, we never had the internet technology to contact you to do research on things like that! Thanks to Telkom!"

True that there are web apps & services out there that aren't [relatively] bandwidth intensive, another good example IMO is GMail and in general the use of AJAX, but whilst Telkodemonopolies actively limits bandwidth intensive applications & services South Africans are still unable to explore, inovate and develop similar bandwidth-intensive services targeted at South Africans - specifically due to the extremely exorbitant cost of local bandwidth and hosting fees - why else are so many .co.za sites hosted on overseas servers...

Why doesn't SA have its own youtube: bcos of Telkodemonopolies!

Whats the sound of something falling on deaf ears??? Think I heard it coming from a Telkom office...anyone else hear that????
 
maybe when they decide to stop dragging their feet about installing that phat-ass inter-continental cable things will get better...it's still no excuse though... maybe papi and pals are actually busy downloading stuff like biscuits in their offices as we sit here talking about this...
 
Thank you Mr Goldstuck for proving the point that many people have been trying to get across to ICASA and Telkom. Internet is not MEANT TO BE CAPPED. What the hell is the point of "high speed" access to the internet if you end up reaching that worthless cap in less than 20 hours if you spend a day watching YouTube or chatting on Skype or even chatting with "virtual" chat programs like IMVU?

Caps take away the entire experience of THE INTERNET. If anything, Telkom and ICASA restrict the growth of the South African internet market... After all, even MyADSL is hosted internationally due to the high costs.

Bah, I'm just stating what has been said for years now... I guess it can be said that South Africa has access to the internet, but doesn't actually have the internet.

Hi Lycanthrope

I agree that the high costs are killing the online space...MyADSL is however still hosted in South Africa thanks to our advertisers.
 
What's even worse is that we spend time ranting about capping and costs and don't realize it's almost totally a waste of our energy and our life for that matter.:(
 
I won't even comment on this.. just makes my blood boil to watch all the money thats being missed out on cos of Telscum.
 
There's so much we're missing out on we don't even know we're missing out on it (oh look, Telkom ad on TV. anyway...). Second Life, for example (and its numerous counterparts) ... there's a whole layer to the internet we're totally cut off from.

Our continued resistance, hate of Telkom and cheering all journalists, writers and analists who stand up against Telkom and other communication providers will finally pay off for our great-great grand-children. We just have to keep at it.
