Why is a adsl line still linked to a phone line

The 2 work independtly of each other so why forces telkom us a phoneline through the throat (My phone line is down again, but my adsl works fine) so obviously they are not needed to be linked :mad:
 
Well you have to have a phone line for ADSL that is why you pay for it. They then charge to a nice "access" fee which has nothing to do with the copper to your house.
 
Anti competitive marketing by Telkom to make more money by forcing you to purchase a land line..... they do this mostly for greed, and partly to try reach installation deadlines ICASA has stipulated.

To me it would seem all of telkoms activities are anti-competitive being that they are the only one offering adsl lines. :)

Greed - plain and simple. :(
 
I thought you paid your +/- R90 to 'rent' the cable running from the pole to your house. Do you have to pay another line rental fee ontop of that for ADSL?!?!?!

You pay R90 for the copper running to your house. This will let you make use of ADSL and voice however to gain access to the DSL part you still have to pay their unique "access" fee. This is why they make you pay both, but there is no line rental as such for ADSL and voice, it is the same thing.
 
So would you sleep better if they charged you no 'line rental' but charged you an extra R90 on the DSL rental? I don't see the problem here.

That is pretty close to justifying the charge. After all, considering the enormous amount we already pay for adsl connectivity and the billions in profit they record annually it's fair to say they dont really need the r90 do they? ;)
 
As far as I see it, with ADSL that R90 is like the asterix they hide the CIL/itemised billing costs in cellphone contracts.
 
It all comes down to the fact they it is waaay over priced, especially so if taken in comparison with the rest of the world. There is no justification for these high prices.
 
simple, cause they can and icasa are too wimpy to force them. Also by shoving it down your throut they auto get R110 rental for the pots port it is connected to and then there is the enticement you got a phone and you gonna pay for it if you use it or not, so why not use it..
 
My phone line at home has been out of order for 2 months now, but ADSL works. I'm happy to leave it like this, but it still irks the hell out of me why I should pay for it.
 
what stoke said, ask for a refund, if you logged a fault their system will force a price correction, if you didn't well they don't 'know' its not working so no refund
