Ta for the link - I notice it does not rip to DivX which is a pity as I will probably be getting an upgrade to my DVD player that can do DivX files as well as the normal VOBS. It should also rip a DVD to 4.7gig (the movie only ) in .VOB format - the fact that it ignores copy protection will also be a plus point - something like Clone DVD - I do not like loaning out originals that cost a fortune and the family can be painful when it comes to borrowing DVD's.

I watched a DivX movie streaming from the laptop to my 37" LCD last week and was amazed at the quality - movie was 764meg as opposed to around 4 gig.
 
IMHO h264 beats the socks off divx :) I havent ripped anything to divx/xvid since trying it.

However ffmpegx (as well as D-Vision I think) will do what you're looking to do. You'll need to take the copy protection off first though with mactheripper.

Did the Xvid conversion on a DVD last night using Handbrake - works perfectly in the new LG RH1999 DVD recorder. Seems to take a little long though - around 1hr 10 min for a 1hr 50 min movie. Have not tried Divx converter yet available from the Divx site which is a pay program.

Did a Divx convert in Windoze (bootcamp installation) in around 40 min with SimpleDivX but the sound was up to * - did an AC3 sound conversion. The Handbrake conversion was MP3.

Anyone know of any other conversion tools for Mac.

I'm guessing you did 2 pass encoding? If you think that the xvid is slow you should try the h264. Instead of ±40fps that I get for xvid you're looking at ±20. :o What you lose in speed you make up for in quality.

If you want you can try ffmpegx and d-vision. Both are free apps but you'll first need to use mactheripper. Keep in mind that Mactheripper can take up to 1/2 hour to rip a dvd to the hdd whereas handbrake usually doesnt require that step.

No, I used 1 pass hence my frustration...

..are you implying that the source need not be ripped to hdd for Handbrake even if the DVD is copy protected? The movie I ripped from DVD last night was not copy protected so I can't confirm if this can be done.

I've come across a couple dvds that handbrake balked at - mostly my kids Disney ones. Everything else I've just put in and let it do its thing.

You'd probably still need to rip them if you want to queue a load overnight.

What fps were you getting on xvid?

Was around 34 avg... (720 X 5xx frame size)

Given the added convenience of not having to rip the dvd in the first place I'd still wager handbrake was your fastest (and simplest) method. How much ram do you have?

I always crop/reduce mine to 688x384 so it fits my screen perfectly and I still save on disk space. Like I said earlier - h264 is chronically slow but the quality is awesome compared to xvid so I get away with it (it also plays nicer with frontrow).

Have 2gig ram... Will play around a bit with the settings and see. I doubt if H264 will play on my DVD recorder. It strictly specifies Xvid & Divx - but I am happy with the quality - just need to test the AC3 audio ripping via Handbrake.

So you have a dvd and you want to rip and encoded it so you can play it on your dvd player? Blank dvd's are pretty cheap these days so you could just copy the original in a fraction of the time.

What part of the equation am I missing? Is there a benefit to encoding it?

Yep, that is correct - I am just playing around a.t.m. (does sound stupid doesn't it). I actually got the Divx player because someone I know can get movies already ripped to Divx.

Fair enough :)

I rip things because kids and a dvd collection dont go well together so I've got a couple of 500gb hdds safely tucked away. :D
 
Using a 30GB (Creative Zen Vision) portable video player which handles DIVX 4 and 5 and XVID -- and not H264 so I prefer XVID myself. The size difference is not great for the
same quality picture.

Xvid makes perfect sense then :)

I'm archiving my collection so I want the best bang for my buck so I decided on h264.

Bought a bunch of dvds, including Casino Royale, today and it was a major pain to back it up :(

There is only one sure way - Win XP :( , any DVD and Clone DVD... does anything.

Dont underestimate MacTheRipper or RipItForMe on XP (via ||s) ;)
