:confused:

I'm running OpenSUSE 10.2 with the 2.6.20 kernel from OpenSUSE Factory (because unlike the stock kernel, it correctly detects the Huawei E220). My hassle is - the modem doesn't want to talk to me. :(

I'm using Tazz_Tux's wvdial.conf as posted on this website ... I saw some-one else on this forum with a similar looking post & it was suggested that they should let the modem settle after supplying the PIN .... I seem to have this problem even if I disable the PIN authentication.

The device seems to be detected fine:

usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
usb 1-1: new device found, idVendor=12d1, idProduct=1003
usb 1-1: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
usb 1-1: Product: HUAWEI Mobile
usb 1-1: Manufacturer: HUAWEI Technologies
usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for generic
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial Driver core
drivers/usb/serial/usb-serial.c: USB Serial support registered for GSM modem (1-port)
option 1-1:1.0: GSM modem (1-port) converter detected
usb 1-1: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB0

However the modem refuses to talk to me:

cameljockey:/home/elton # wvdial pin huewai_e220 internet 384k
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: AT+CPIN=6503
--> Sending: ATQ0
--> Re-Sending: AT+CPIN=6503
--> Modem not responding.
cameljockey:/home/elton #

PIN authentication disabled via Cellphone. Second attempt:

cameljockey:/home/elton # wvdial huewai_e220 internet 384k
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
--> Sending: ATQ0
--> Re-Sending: ATZ
--> Modem not responding.

Same problem. :(

At a bit of a loss... So any advice would be much appreciated....

-Elton.

EDIT: Tried the short cable with one plug instead of the one with two plugs per Tazz_Tux's suggestion on the sticky (was using the other one), but it doesn't seem to have made any difference at all. The modem is tested as working under Windoze XP and MacOS X (but I don't have a Mac, and testing it on Windoze last nite made me remember why I don't like using Windoze :-/).

Hi Elton

I just posted a similar message. Have you had any luck yet?

Hey elton,

Even thou it was detected correctly, did you remove the usbstorage module ?

Tazz_Tux, *no*, I didn't, and running 'rmmod usb-storage' and re-connecting the device has made all the difference. :o Testing under Gentoo now (OpenSUSE wasn't working out for me for other reasons, so I'm booting up my old Gentoo partition now instead) - though I'm sure the solution would've been the same under SUSE.

Thanks a lot, TT, I owe you one. :cool:
