I am so sick of the negative publicity we are giving Virgin.....

They are still in their infant stage and already Mtn are [ON PROMOTION]Giving away 2gb for R399.Now come on,this would not have happened had VM not come onto the scene. For those who have stuck with Virgin from the beginning will have fond memories of not being charged for internet for a brief moment in time.Or how about the arrival of those lovely 128k sims.I have been on every network[RRRRRRRRIPPP-OFF!] and smirked when i saw Mtns promotion. If you think Virgin is bad ,i remember buying a 1gig bundle every month and never use it up[Doesnt carry over!]Then buying a 350MB,it runs out early and you have to wait for the month to end just to continue using those stinking bundles.Oh and being cut of the net every 15mins for a year and then not being able to log on at all![Which many noticed but failed to comment on.]This was roughly a year ago and MTN is how old?Virgin is still a baby and they have achieved more then all of those sharks. my connection is as stable as ever as long as i avoid the hordes of mixit users between 5 and 9pm.Sure i get the odd disconection and slow speed but not nearly as often as i experienced on Mtn.If you hate VM then get Mtn ok?then post your condeming statements on the MTN thread! And for those who like to blow too much on ASDL cool!Enjoy it.........I can just imagine how many are gonna argue, condemn and nail me after this and im ready....
LIBERATE ME TU TE ME![LATIN TRANLATED: SAVE YOURSELF FROM HELL!]

VIRGIN MOBILE IS THE BEST VALUE FOR MONEY AND HOW MANY NETWORKS GIVE YOU R100 RAND BACK EVERY 2 MONTHS?MINE DOES...VIVA LE VIRGIN!

I never get R100 back, my mms's don't work anymore, my gprs on my phone is busted, no one can reach me when I've got full signal as it says "subscriber not available".

I was one of the first VM customers, but since number portability is here, I'll definitely look to switching over to MTN. Sorry, but being a baby and not being able to walk yet is no excuse. They've got millions at their disposal, it's time to start spending and fixing the errors.

I'm switching from VM, as soon as I can, and I'm not even a data customer ;)

I think people give Virgin too much credit for the MTN special anyway. MTN, rightly, see Vodacom as their competition. Virgin/Cell C are a bit of a joke, I've still got the sim somewhere but I doubt I'll ever use it again. I need something that works, period.

Oy, Demon Angel Virgin fanboy do you know about paragraphs.;)

You haven't been on Virgin long - that I know - but you've changed your tune from when you had problems yourself
" I cannot believe this,a week ago i noticed that i kept getting disconnected from virgin."

Look, Virgin is cheap. It's cheap because the service suks. We didn't know it was so bad when we joined. They also claim to "great" on service and make a lot of promises. Look closely and see how many of these they have broken.

That's why we are critical. Not because we don't like the name or other spurious reason. [There's no need for you to go and write nice things about the company just because we are not having joy with it.]

I beg to differ. Virgin originally introduced cheap pricing to attract customers. But they didn't foresee the hoards that would arrive to milk the data network. And this is the reason that problems have crept up in the network.

I agree with demon angel, in principle (but not exactly in phrasing and paragraphing ;) )

Virgin has given me problems in the past, I admit, but not more than Vodacom has (I was on Vodacom for 5 years and on Virgin for almost 6 months, so I think I am able to make a fair comparison). Virgin Mobile is infinitely superior to Vodacom (which doesn't say much, but it says enough to keep me on VM).

I still have my old Vodacom SIM, but the only reason I still put it in is to see whether some idiot sent a message to my old number :D

Ever since I've been using a system of MTN for browsing, email and IM and Virgin for any large downloads I've been happy. Virgin is cheap - but not dependable. At least with MTN my IM gets to connect before I lose my connection.

Go for the Gap

I think that Virgin are filling a much needed Gap

One has to look at what is working, and how it can work for you, and others

First off, just using the Cellphone itself, I have not had a problem making or receiving calls, and their does not seem to be any complaints in that area.

The pay per second billing is great, I have used it and am very happy - Very good feature

Now as far as I am concerned the best thing anyone can do is download Opera Mini and use that for their phone browsing, I am so happy with it, it makes my day, it is such a nice thing to have, and the fact that it cost much less because of the cheaper data rates is the icing on the cake, also I have yet to encounter a service out when browsing on the phone

Now any learner who has a WAP phone, Opera Mini and Virgin Mobile can find out just about anything for little cost, think how much getting children books and stuff costs

Now next is that I can use the phone as a modem with the PC - one of the important things for me is if I have to do banking in the daytime, on dial-up Telkom will bleed you dry, I did it with my cellphone yesterday, cost me all of 20 cents, I would have paid 60 cents to Telkom for a crabby 1.5 minutes - Now I can sit down with a cup of coffee and take my time, which is the way it should be

Then we come to the hold ups on GPRS / EDGE - Which I have to say I have encountered, I am not sure why they are their but I am not as up-set as I would be if I was being charged for each minute or second I was on line, like dial-up does - Again it has also been pointed out about the abuse / use of the data side of things causing problems

Anyway for the few things I have detailed above I think that the Virgin option is very worth while for a lot of people

One last thing

When I am using the Phone as a modem it works quick, twice as fast as dial-up, (7.7 average on downloads)

And if anyone has noticed these days, Telkom seems to be shaping dial-up... it goes for about 1.5 minutes, stops for 15 seconds and starts again, my guess is they are doing this to stop ppl from using Skype on dial-up

They've had more than enough time to sort out these problems though, and their data network isn't the only problem.

Well the other issue at hand is the fact that they are a virtual network, so they have to take up your problem with the actual network, in most cases Cell C, which in some areas are using Vodacom. So it isn't really a simple case of Virgin solving problems on their "own'' network.

Virgin do some things right. I recently had a problem with the sim card - probably from moving it from phone to E620 all the time. I popped round to the Virgin shop at Eastgate and they replaced the sim there and then and what is more at NO CHARGE!

I was in CT last week and I established a connection via my E620 at 8am and was still connected at 4pm. No dropped connection for 8 hours. Impressive I thought.

Thanks for the gesture Gerald, really appreciated, I did speak to you last year via email,

For funny's sake, I've still got the email and one of the Virgin employees, which I won't mention said, "did the customer remember to make a chargeable call?" LOL, I get asked that at least once when I've got a problem.

Expect my email later today, thanks Gerald ;)

True but ultimately they're marketing the product as a "Virgin network" Their problems with their suppliers is exactly that, theirs, not ours. Even if they do use Vodacom towers its still routed on to the Cell C network from there which is where the problems seem to start. I wonder if Virgin's data is routed differently from Cell C's data too considering they use a different APN.

happy for a change

Darn it skeptik you are as negative as your name suggests.

I have been on Virgin from the start, its the forum i am new to.
I know what i said in the past and i took it all into consideration to look at the bright side.A week ago a technician called ME! up to check if i was having any problems...
I WAS WINDED BY THE FACT THEY CALLED ME!
So i told him of my occational disconnection issues and he assured me that in time it will be resolved.WOW i felt so good. What network does this? Not mtn.
Virgin is a huge data threat to the competition.Davids per meg pricing[as cheap as its gonna get i realise]will start to chink the armor of Goliath in the months to follow.

For me the service has been nothing but good and i know it seem as though i have swung 180 degrees. But when you take a step back and look at the bigger picture you gotta admit that their allusive 50c per meg pricing, forces all the big networks to induce real competitive prices.
And thats good for all!
Maybe its my beautiful girlfriend that inspires my optimism....

ps.My Paragraphing, grammar is purposely done as my freedom of expression.[and its fun.]

I think (as a heavy data user of three networks) that what is missing here is a comparison of apples with apples. If the old saying is true that you get what you pay for, then by any criteria, with VM you get more than you pay for. Data at the basic rate is a quarter the price of Voda -- but the service is definitely not only a quarter as good. Most of the time, if you're not a speed demon, it works a treat, and you can't argue with the price. VM is Dihatsu data, Voda is supposed to be Rolls Royce. They both get you there, but the Roller might be a little more reliable.

Seems to me the answer to this unanswerable issue is simply to do what many of us do: have a fistfull of cheap and cheerful SIMs, relish the bargain-basement VM data when you can, and when you can't, make the switch. Works for me!

I'm all for competition and the more, the better, BUT...

the fact that Virgin Mobile piggy-backs off CellZ, will never make them competitive - they're doomed for failure.

Well, look at the bright side, there is still Virgin Active?

I too am happy with Virgin...

I've been on MTN, Vodacom, CellC(prepaid was Gprs only no edge) and now Virgin, truth be told Virgin has it's problems but I remember a year ago being without a Vodacom Gprs signal for 2 days!. Virgin has not been that disastrous, but I have experienced the most stable EDGE on MTN, and 3G from Vodacom.

Sadly though, ever since Virgin started their Mobile and Money services in SA their brand has been given a knock by the incompetence over here, I don't have the same view of Virgin I had before.
