So I've been a forumite here for sometime now and really love this place! Been posting from work, but have now decided to get ADSL @ home.
Having never had the luxury of having ADSL at home before, I would appreciate assistance in choosing the best ISP and package for my requirements.

1. I live in TableView (still have to call Telkom to see if its ADSL ready, but I suspect it should be) Sandown to be exact.
2. I won't be doing alot of downloading, as I have a buddy in England who does that and then his brother, grabs it from his server.
3. I'll be playing online games like PartyPoker, AA and woteva else I can get.
4. Obviously be spending mucho grande time here with y'all! :)

Also another thing, if I may - will wireless be an option? I'm concerned about the speeds and connectivity.

PS: I don't know if it helps, but my pc specs
Pentium 4 3.40 ghz
1 gig ddr ram
Geforce Nvidia 256mb 128 bit - don't recall if it 5500 or 7200 i 4get :rolleyes:
250 gb Harddrive

Well if you are not going to be doing much downloading then you might get by on some topup bandwidth from Webafrica that goes for R70/gig and rolls over to the next months if you don't use it all up...

I think a 384k line should be fine for your needs, and Tlekom are anyway in the process of upping all line speeds for free, so that should be fine...

What sort of wireless at you looking at? A wireless modem or a wireless isp, that isn't dsl, like iburst?

Sorry meant wireless ISP.
about the speeds though...would I be upgraded as well, though being with Webafrica?
And hows there helpdesk?

Well as far as we know, going from what I could gather when I spoke to Telkom's helpdesk who then checked with superiors, with the 1Mbit trial been extended to 4Mbit indefinitely, the same thing will happen as when they phased out 192k...

384 users will be upped to 512 and 384 will fall away. The prices will remain the same and the upgrade is free of charge. This is to do with your line and has nothing to do with who you choose to be your service provider.

WebAfrica is really good. Signup takes literally a minute or two and bam, you have your account paid for and up and running!
 
I've just noticed the WebAfrica thread in this section! seems ppl are hyped and I'm gonna give them a run, but I suspect I should get the line installed first :p btw how much is Telscum rental for ADSL p/month again...?
 
Yeah, webafrica really has been as good as all the hype :)

Line rental for 384 is like R250/month which is not bad...Having it upped to 512 iwill not hurt either :)

You'd be upgraded no matter what ISP you're on, the line is separate from the ISP account. Personally I've had bad experiences with wireless ISPs, but some people seem to like them, they're generally less reliable though, especially for online gaming. WA's helpdesk/service is great!
 
coolbeans I think I'll go with them on a trial run with the R70 p/gig package. If need be I'll up to there 3gig p/month. I wonder if the 3gig package carries over as well - I sent a PM to their dude who jumped on board in the other thread... I'll check the webpage a bit later more indepth, also what do you use HJ?

I have topup bandwidth from them, as well as a separate local account with them, and then an account with Openweb. All really good :)

I've used WA before and never had any problems. They have prepaid packages that carry over and then normal packages that don't, the std 3GB package won't but it'll be slightly cheaper per gig. If you're going to get a 3GB package though rather go for the TelkomInternet one, you should get about 10GB before they cap you if you're lucky and then you can just switch over to WA prepaid for the rest of the month.

Sorry but Telkoms line rental is BAD it is completely disportionate to the actual cost to Telkom who are already receiving a rental from the householder for the same line which is merely split . This is the portion of ADSL cost that should be brought down FIRST as by far the most users of ADSL are like myself who do e mail and web browsing , where one or two GB's are all we use a month and a down speed of 384 kbps ( average actual - 312 kbps ) is all we really need - 512 kbps would be good but a halving of the line rental would be better for most of us
Have recently changed from Telkom as ISP to WebAfrica to save and am happy so far

Yes it is bad. But Shake&Bake wants DSL so I am saying , out of the options that are available it is not bad.
 
agreed boland I'm not gonna use Telscum as ISP, but unfortunatley have to rent the line from them and agreed that the expense is costly, but what you gonna do
 
what would be the differences/advantages between shaped and un-shaped acc's? For my needs do I need to look at an unshaped acc?

If you're gaming on overseas servers unshaped would be better. If you're going to be using local servers for gaming shaped should be fine.
