Well, you can do it on PC's already - the network load is not particularly high, it downloads chunks of raw data and processes it - so considering the Power requirements of hte PS3, it'll be a great way to heat your lounge in winter . . .

Thats the best use for a PS3 I have seen to date! Maybe Sony could re-brand their whole approach to their next-cough-gen console and sell it as a pharmaceutical online utility! Go SONY!

Lol, it's IBM's big private joke.

1. Make Grid computing node engine, code name "cell" (If you read the original design intent, it was stackable to build supercomputers . . )

2. Convince Someone else to contribute to R&D - re Sony, in the name of a powerful games engine. Preferably a company too arrogant to admit when they've been duped and have to go buy a graphics chip as well.

3. Laugh all the way to the bank as said company subsidizes your product into the market and convince said company to give your core market linux to use the Cell in their data centres, under the pretence of them getting an EU tax rebate.
 
Well actually it's their "other" private joke.

The first being that after being driven out of the PC market by cheap clones and Microsoft, they're now the driving force behind the commoditization of the Media PC - re Home console ;)

Wii - Broadway = IBM
Sony - Cell = IBM
Microsoft - PowerPC = IBM

So who really is the big winner in the console war? :)

Hate to spoil the fun lol but didn Sony go to IBM instead of the other way round? And I thought the graphics card was brought in so it would be a little bit easier for developers than having two Cells which would make programming harder than it already is.

But since you have derailed this thread even more lets keep it going...

Sony seems to be causing real problems with developers with this Cell processor. it's all great and well that it can handle 1 trillion gigaflops p/s but if the developers can't get anything into it to process it is pointless...

I don't understand people buying the PS3 for it's possible potential honestly.. Would you buy a car that might be very good in a year once the mechanics have figured out how the engine works?

Rather wait until the developers have unleashed the potential and then you can pick one up with rumble for half the price it is now...
 
hmmm... there's sony once again with random ass advertising... just think: EVEN THE OLD, SICK AND DYING CAN PLAY OUR CONSOLE.

one wonders just how those with parkinson's would be able to use the new ps3 controllers. i recon the game would over load and get the shakes every time it see's the next person. (it's a joke, not to offend those with it or those who know some one with it, - the ps3 that is)

Not quite, interesting approach though. The reason Sony needed a discrete GPU was simply because there are things that GPU just does better like texture and lighting.

The "Cell" can do some graphics, namely pushing around polygons- because that's what the SPU do - vector arithmetic, but graphics are more than just triangles and positions.

Think of it like this, if you were drawing a car - the cell, with it's SPU's could do the wireframe model, the outer shell and even the movement and position, but in order to add a bit of a reflection on the surface, make it look bumpy, add some anti-aliasing or a bit of motion blur SPU's can't do it because they just add numbers. You'd have to do it in software, which from a performance perspective is just not going to happen. A GPU has dedicated hardware pixel and vertex shaders to do all of the above.

And that's all besides the fact that the Cell costs about 3x that of the NV47 GPU.

They say that playing games at old age helps against the development of
senility - a major cause of that is Alzheimer's. So any mental activity - crosswords, sudoku, folding origami, watching Egoli --- ok maybe not that,
PS3, 2, Xbox, etc will help a great deal.
 
Rather keep a PS3/360 around so you can do the (croaky crone voice) "In my day we only had 1080p, and had to play in 2d" . . .
