40" Sony Bravia or 37" Mecer...

Ok so I need a new TV to compliment the ps3 I am buying on the 23rd (please no xbox360 vs ps3 wars...).
Now the Sony Bravia is considered the best if you can spend that kind of money, but at R20 000 its a lot to spend considering the 37" Mecer is only R9 000.I would never have really thought of even considering buying a Mecer being the brand conscious person that I am, but I happened to see one right next to the Sony and the picture quality was identical. I didn't want to like the Mecer but I really couldn't fault it.

I think the source was plain old dvd so I have no idea what it looks like when connected to a console. The guys on xbox360.co.za and Prophecy forum seem to think the 32" Mecer is sweet when connected to a console and I can only assume that the 37" would be similar. A few people have mentioned that regular TV input is a bit grainy and does not look as good as on a regular TV. From my understanding this is the case with all lcd monitors though.

My question at the end of the day is if anybody has actually compared the quality of the Sony against the Mecer when viewing regular broadcasting signals? As I will be using this TV for both gaming and regular TV it is quite important that the Mecer is as good, or almost as good, as the Sony.
 
tell the people at the place you saw the two LCD screens that you wanna test a ps3 or xbox on there...
Most sales people at recognised dealers would assist you with this...

Yeah I agree with you, but what I really want to test is the quality of normal broadcast tv signal. But I think I will still take the ps3 to test out as well.

Are you sure they both have built-in tv receivers?

I will tell you what put me off Samsung. I bought a Samsung 244t 24" monitor . You know the one everyone raves about. Well what a POS, input lag like you wont believe. It is well documented on forums like [Hard]forum that it has this problem. Apparrently Samsung are well aware of it but it has somthing to do with their overdrive system to prevent ghosting. Guess it is a "feature". Now some people dont notice it at all and think that those that do are imagining it, so it's really personal opinion. It has kind of put me off Samsung, and then there was a thread on the xbox360 forum where a guy called Sarge compared the Sony to the Samsung and the Sony won hands down in picture quality. If I remember correctly the Sony even felt faster.

So if I was going to spend that kind of money it would be a Bravia. If anyone wants the Samsung there is a promotion at Makro that ends today where you can pick the 40" up for R15 999.
 
I posted a follow-up thread on the Prophecy Console forums regarding the Mecer 32" you might want to check it out. I dont see that there will be much difference in performance between the Xbox360 & PS3 on these systems (depending on what inputs you use ofcourse)

I am not positive, thanks I'll go check it out. Be kind of funny coming to my house and seeing this expensive setup with no DSTV :) , but damn over R400pm just burns my ass.

Hey Fudzy yeah I think i remember reading your thread. I think the 37" is just the bigger brother so it should be good to. What is the normal tv broadcast signal like? I expect it to be worse than a regular tv, but do you think it is comparable to the Sony? It does have a tv receiver doesn't it?
 
Remember that you don't need a built in tuner if you have a VCR or HDD recorder that can do the job for you.
 
I went to AudioVision in Canal Walk. Not a single BD player or HD-DVD player around. So why buy a 1080p set. Oh for PS3? Well that's the ONLY reason to buy one. I would however wait a bit as the current generation is overpriced
and sort of first gen 1080p LCD screens. Wait till a 1080p 40 inch sells
for R15K or less and buy then, that should be in a year or so. Now I would bring back an HD-DVD player from US (June) or Japan (July) but I figured that
since there is so little HD-DVD/BD content - it's not worth it. Definately only Hollywood cr@p as HD content mostly.

Well a 1080p set would be great for future movies but not so great for gaming. The 720p is a good balance between quality and fps.

Hey ziglet, I have been having a re-think about that Samsung you mentioned after looking at lcd's today. That 6000:1 contrast is awesome. Where could I find one for that price?

6000:1 "Dynamic" contrast. Actual (static) contrast ratio 1300:1. There are no LCDs on the market with such a high static contrast ratio.

Get the Sony. While the Samsung and the Sony have the same LCD panel (which begs the question- "why is the contrast ratio quoted differently?"), the Sony has better video processing. And for 40" shouldn't be much more expensive.

Sarge on the prophecy forums posted quite a good review of the Sony... do a search, or maybe ask him on those forums (I think he uses it for gaming mostly)..

Yes you are right about that, was wondering how there could be such a large difference. So irritating that all manufacturers make their products out to be better than the competition with marketing b.s.
