Hi Guys

Quite a few reports have been made of very high latency on any dsl lines in this area - repeated calls to Telkom Support has left a bitter taste in my mouth ... referring me to my isp... all 3 of them ...

Anyone else currently having latency issues (1st hop already)

I have had seriously bad packet loss for the last 2 weeks or so.

It basically equates to anywhere between 3 and 9% packet loss but makes online gaming virtually impossible.
Initially it was only on my Saix account while IS was perfect but that has now changed and the packet loss is on both accounts.

I am in Northriding (Corner of Blandford and Ascot) and there has been a lot of activity around the Telkom exchange and the manholes in front of the various complexes so I dont know if that could've caused it.

Anyone else having similar problems in the area?

Ping statistics for 66.249.89.99:
Packets: Sent = 30, Received = 30, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 413ms, Maximum = 416ms, Average = 414ms
This is normally ±220ms

Ping statistics for 196.30.31.120:
Packets: Sent = 30, Received = 30, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 19ms, Average = 13ms

These results are consistent with those obtained over the past few days.

Perhaps there is now overload due to expansion in your area? Construction interfered with local reticulation?

Yes, excessively high latency in North Riding on Sunday. Was pinging ~3500ms on my shaped and ~1000 on unshaped to my WoW server. Downloads sluggish, sites not coming up, etc, etc, etc. Clearly not just ur ISP then.

Haven't tried today tho.

I've been battling with my line since Friday evening... local is ok. International is borked, especially to WoW servers and sites...

Is it just the IS backbone hosted accounts or is everyone suffering?

Also had erratic behaviour on WoW servers. Was really bad last week Thursday.

Also effecting my unshapped account.

The general reaction I've gotten from some work colleagues was that any IS hosted ADSL accounts are crap anyway, but be that as it may, I'd still like to know if there is something that can be done about it, as short of changing ISP's or getting a Rage VPN account again, I'm not sure I can live with 1600ms+ ping times to the WoW:US Stormrage servers for much longer.

The sad thing is, local browsing is brilliant, so from a Telkom point of view, it's grafting happily. As soon as we hit that London link, though, it goes pear-shaped.

This doesn't sound good, I as looking forward to ADSL without all of these problems. Well I guess MyADSL exists for a reason..

EHV - its OK

This is the normal latency to Google.
The latency has been 400ms+ for the last few days but is OK today.

iBurst speed test - 442kbps/239kbps

As you can see, ADSL and iBurst tested within minutes of each other yield interesting comparisons.

In my location, ADSL is both faster and more stable than iBurst.

However, I did not appreciate having my ADSL capped on Monday without warning, and I think it absurd that I had to subscribe to a new 2g account with new User ID and Password. To circumvent this problem in future, I will subscribe to WebAfrica for their R70 per gig pay as you go to keep going when I get capped next month.

Personal experience of accounts departments:
Telkom does what they say they will do to fix problems.
iBurst never gets it right. I have been charged for 3 Security Suites since I installed one (1) last year. It is still like that on my latest account depite credits being given last month.

All is not as it should be

Ok here are some ping results

I am seriously at a loss here (pardon the pun) and this is as frustrating as all hell when you are trying to play an FPS.
Downloads are by and large unaffected.

Amyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
