So the ADSL is working fine, but the dial tone is gone from both telephones in the house.

Is this possible, that there can be a problem on the telephone line but not the ADSL?

Yip kiepie ;) It's happened to me quite a lot.

Yes, you can have a fault on just the phone line while ADSL continues to work.

Yes happened many times to me. My neighbour said she has been working like this for months now (To scared to report the problem to telkom in case they destroy her adsl as well) she does not need the phone, but adsl is a must

Yes never mess with something that works (adsl in my case), but I need my telephone line aswell. It happen 2 days before my adsl got installed, then they said the port at the exchange has blown.

I just hope they leave my wonderful-no problem adsl alone and just fix my telephone line.

I was just about to post the same thing! My Self install line was activated on tuesday night and the microfilter are installed correctly.

My problem was that i could not receive phone calls but adsl was working fine. When i reported the fault the problem was fixed same day but they killed my adsl. Took lots of complaining and way to long before it was working again so be careful.

Don't say that! Hopefully my phone line will be fix without ADSL going down. :(
Reported it last night. No dail tone, and when I phone it from my cellphone it rings but I can't hear it.

We had the same problem the other day at one of my clients. It appears to be a faulty circuit board in your ADSL box thingy they install when they come around. The tech told me they're suppose to replace any old hardware and it took him 10 minutes. The fax line went right up...

Problem was getting the tech to come out, because no matter how much I told people the dial tone was off on the voice portion but the ADSL was fine, the more they made it out to be an ADSL problem and wanted to test the line remotely.

Recovering

I am a recovering Telkom casualty.
Dialtone went out, ADSL became intermittent.

Two months and four days later, after 60+ calls, three fault reports (they kept closing them) and stories about cable jointers, locked boxes, DSLAMs, and only after they wanted to blame the router, I made a total and continuous nuisance of myself for those four days (escalate, escalate) at Customer "Services" did a tech finally arrive to re-crimp joints in the local lead.

Seems OK now.

My advice is to try ADSL fault reports for a day or two and then start bugging customer services.

Good Luck.

ADSL box thingy? The one in your house.

Mine was an self install and my telephone line is only 2 months old.

They also said they are going to test my line. So hopefully they understood me - ADSL working, but Dail Tone not working.

Can't believe this is happening to so many! :(

There's probably a Short-Circuit on the line thats causing a problem with the Voice Line(dial tone), I had a similar problem in the begining of the year.

My ADSL is down now, connected via GPRS.

The techie says it is an ariel cable problem, something about reinstalling the line to the nearest "box" (somewhere down in the street) :(

If I want to use my line for both the adsl and telephone, do I plug the microfilter into the jack on the wall and then put the modem and phone in the sockets marked line on the microfilter?

The Modem/Router should be connected directly to the phone line, the phones should be connected to the filter then to the line
