ADSL not working with windows vista update or MSN messenger

Hi All

As per the topic, i cant use windows update or messenger on my adsl line. Works perfectly with 3g or at the office??.

Its been like this for roughly 3 weeks IS & Telkom accounts??

Is this a known problem???
 
No, it was silly. But like I tell people who install Nortons, "you are just going to have to change if you want to do anything". I think the general consensus here is to avoid Vista, but hopefully someone here will be able to answer your question.
 
What is the problem with your ADSL? How do you connect it? Modem or Router? Can you open websites?

I'm a Windows Vista user and everything works on my PC and internet.
 
you've most likely have manual DNS settings for 3G configured or proxy settings somewhere that clashes with your ADSL - hence it works on one, and not the other...
 
spoonman - what's your network setup like?

I found that Vista works like a charm on my home PC which acquires an IP from DHCP from my router. MSN Messenger grafts, no problem.

But at work we have Diginet and ADSL so I have to specify an IP address and then use a ROUTE command to route web traffic out ADSL and WAN traffic over diginet.

Anyway, at work when specifying an IP, MSN Messenger completely stops working, just will not connect. As soon as I put it on DHCP then it works fine. Freakin bizarre.
 
I agree with LabAnimal. It sounds like some proxy settings or something that are setup for your 3G connection.
Try opening internet explorer then: Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Select Never Dial a Connection. Then click LAN settings, and ensure everything is UNticked.
*Probably Unrelated* I also had some problems with msn on vista, but this had to do with Data Execution Prevention (DEP), which is meant to protect one from harmful files. The only way to turn it off is through the command prompt: http://vista.beyondthemanual.com/2006/11/vista_tip_turn_off_data_execut.html

edit: jacobstone: when you specify an IP, do you also specify default gateway and dns servers?
