Telkom creates criminals.

Come to think of it, I would have expected bandwidth theft to decrease as awareness of how expensive and how badly screwed we are. Bandwidth theft from Telkom themselves I could understand but from other users?
Desperate times call for desperate measures. If the Foreign national down the road has an internet cafe, and he has just crossed several borders to get here, do you think the morality of using up someone elses bandwidth is going to stop him from feeding himself or his family? Just a thought.

If Telkom made it a mandatory part of the installation procedure to change default passwords then the problem would probably go away. I'm sure it would be too difficult to force a password change on the first logon.

For some reason .. nobody's poining the finger at teklom for siphoning off bits of people's caps.

You can change your password online at http://telkomsa.net and choosing the password tool.
A Telkom employee should not be able to retrieve your password, other by carrying out a deliberate crack of their password database.
I doubt they can see your password...that would be bad security

depends how they store them..I doubt they have the intellectual capacity to hash passwords before they store them. It's telkom we talking abt...
They are listed on the NYSE, I think they have to comply to Sarbanes-Oxley's Act

Hey kids it's analogy time again! We CoZas (yeah I just made that one up) just love to use analogies:
So the municipality decides to charge R10 per 1l of water in Gatsonderwater, which is completely insane, but the Mayor's getting a slice of the profits, so the people just for some reason accept their fate (oh and Bottled water gets banned just to cover all bases). Koos one day checks the bills and sees a nasty surprise: somebody's been using a metric ****ton of water and it wasn't him! Lo and behold, his pipes have been opened by a SLY FOX and some skuilie people are helping themselves to his supply. There isn't really a law prohibiting people from taking water, and it's a bit of a hassle with the police to get things sorted. All he knows is he's sitting with the big bills for something he didn't use, and his friends in adjacent towns are mocking him, asking him why he doesn't move somewhere else, but it's his home town and he grew up here, so he's not going to leave just because of this particular issue.

This is thread's point is like saying a person that makes a gun is responsible for every person killed with that gun. It's the criminals themselves that are at fault.
Oh noes, petrol's price is becoming high. Gonna go steal other people's petrol out of their tanks now? Gonna blame Shell for that?

If I had details for an account, on the last day of the month, 24 hours before the cap resets, I might abuse it, it is very possible to do 3G in one day. I do it every month on my own account. Please send me your usernames and passwords.
Of course it does not justify theft, but it definitely effects the incentive to be honest. I would blame Shell for it if they were the only oil company in ZA and charged us R500 a litre (remember you are paying 4000% to much for adsl)
I guess that's true, but most people who hack accounts would try to justify it with "TELKOM IS TOO EXPENSIVE SO I HAXX".
If you can't afford it, don't steal it. Simple as that. Seriously, this bandwidth stealing thing has been out of control for quite a while and no-one does anything about it.
The people that pisses me off the most are the ones that say "Lol learn to secure your router you noob, you deserve to be hacked".
Take for example : A woman walks down the street. Suddenly, some guy grabs and rapes her. When she asks for help, the onlookers ask her if she carries anything for protection and then tell her it's her fault that she's being raped if she doesn't. In the same logic, She *deserves* to be raped because she doesn't carry any protection on her.
I know it's not an ideal example, but it's the retarded mindset most people in South Africa seem to have.
