Windows Vista suffers from a bug that causes many machines to stall while deleting, copying and moving files, a flaw that has provoked consternation in online forums.

"I've seen this bug in action, and trust me, it's as if you're copying over a 64k link using only 256mb of RAM," one Reg reader complained. "To add to the problem, you can't cancel or anything."

According to a thread on Microsoft's TechNet site, Microsoft has issued a hotfix for the problem, but it has failed to quell the outrage. For one thing, individual users must get Microsoft's approval before the fix can be downloaded, according to our tipster. And for another, hotfixes are more of a pain to install than patches.

We've contacted a Microsoft spokeswoman, who promised to see if a patch for the problem in the works. Meanwhile, Vista users continue to grumble.

"I simply can not believe that I updated to a new computer and put windows Vista on it to find that it's not even capable of moving and deleting files in an efficient manner," one disaffected user posted in the Microsoft forum. "Microsoft must be kidding! The most basic of features that I use all the time is a slow train wreck."

and I thought there was an incompatibility with my networked drive.
 
I've noticed this too, its terrible :(

Good to hear it is a known bug and there is a hotfix... now if only I can get MS to give that to me with my cracked Vista and all... ill go have a look at some non-MS locations first.
 
yeah, But imagine if u have bought a new pc. or maybe upgraded to Vista recently. but don't have access to the Internet. ??

I know alot of ppl who have Basic systems, but buy WindowsXP or OfficeXP and upgrade to latest Pastel and other software. But don't always have internet access to do the updates.
 
Vista is nice looking and all but crap for your system, slow and with lots of bugs,mainly the upgrade packets for XP.
 
I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'll upgrade to Vista when SP1 gets released.

Not before then, I'm enjoying XP with Vista Transformation Pack far too much!
 
i've noticed this - however: I've also noticed that when you share a folder, be it 1000 files or 1 file, it takes BLOODY long!.

I was ready to kick my LAN drive off the table - was trying to reorganise files on it and it just takes forever - in XP it is working fine. Luckily I only have Vista on another partition - I go there now and again to see what updates are available but to use it as a primary OS is not working for me.
 
Funny, I've never noticed this?:confused: I moved all my movies from one drive to another on Sunday all with one swipe and it went fast...75GB of movies...
 
Why does this bug surface all of a sudden? I mean, Vista was in Beta for a long time, and they should have picked it up then...


...unless M$ slipped in some naughty code somewhere... :D


No thanks, Vista is not for me at this stage.
 
I've also never noticed this bug... I've moved around 200GBs of files at a time and it was the same speed as XP, if not quicker? Is it a bug that only appears when there are certain hardware/software setups?

I've moved back to XP on both my machines at home. It's my firm opinion (not that it counts for much) that Vista isn't ready for live use. Sure it's pretty but give it a rest till it hits SP2 (or SP1 if you're adventurous like Kingrob ;) )
 
Its not a slow down for big files, its more on the time calculation screen. If you move a tiny file or even delete it then often the copying/deleting pop up just sticks around doing nothing. Very frustrating, and people have been complaining about it on the beta forums for a long time..

Network speeds in general are also slower though, but server performance onto Vista is another issue.
 
well - i pretty much have my file system in place so - its not killing me at this stage, vista is very usable. I'm sure the fix will be available soon enough if MS has released a statement regarding the err.

As for my network folder sharing... let it share, and cancel it after a few minutes, the folder will be fully shared by the looks of it - the only way i've managed to get it working sofar.

As for copying and moving - the problem is there, but not an immediate outcry!.
 
Could it be related to two things?

1) Windows can keep older versionf os each file, so it's busy allocating space/whatever for this functionality?

2) the new Windows Search feature can slow down PCs as it gets busy indexing your files, so perhaps it's indexing all the files you're copying?

I'm not sure, I've only recently messed around with Vista.
