Great sales, let's see if it keeps going like this. :)

According to the BBC, Sony has SOLD 600,000 PS3 systems across Europe on its launch day last week. As stated previously, the PS3 performed particularly well in UK, selling 165,000 on its launch weekend in comparison to the Wii's 105,000.

Sony is hoping to retake its title as the console market leader, as Microsoft and Nintendo head the next-gen race.

Meanwhile, games firm Namco Bandai has said it is to use the PS3's Cell chip in arcade machines.

Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment UK said the figures were a vote of confidence in the machine.

"Having broken the record for launch sales, we are now replenishing retail stock across the country," he said.

Yeah, I used to love going to arcades, but I can't remember the last time I saw something new that's worth playing.
 
Interestingly phrased, I wonder if it's just a miscommunication, but do you think they're licensing just the Cell, or they're licensing the entire archtecure, including the RSX? I'm just wondering how that effect ports between namco consoles and the PS3.

Wait for Halo 3 to sell a couple million more 360's.

I think that this generation's gonna be a very even match all round. Maybe not quite as big of a loss for $ony as many people predicted, but just looking at how well the 360 and the Wii have done already, means that the PS3 won't dominate in the way that the PS2 did over the xbox 1 and Gamecube.

Heh heh, you keep thinking that.

If it's so great, why didn't it sell out? 360 and Wii sold their million as soon as they had them, Sony's sitting with stock. It's just the beginning boys, just the beginning.

*sigh* That same argument again...

Doesn't matter that they sold more than the 360 and Wii, the only thing that matters is that they didn't sell out?

So by your logic, if they had less stock, sold less, but sold everything, they would be a huge success? Just doesn't make sense...

That's not my argument, I'll try again:

The competition could not hold stock on hand till they had both sold way over a (multi?) million units, although it may have taken them a while to get that amount of stock. The huge numbers for launch are due to pent up demand, demand that remained for 5 months for the 360 and persists till today for the Wii.

In the PS3's defense, with stock on hand consumers may be waiting because they know there's stock. That's why the launch numbers don't mean squat in the grand scheme of things, and we wait to compare notes a month from now.

I would imagine with the PS3's price point in EU some ppl may also be waiting for pay day before picking one up.

Agreed Toxin, boost sales, but i doubt it will shift millions of consoles as BC suggests.

I myself intend on purchasing a PS3 at some point, just saving for a decent sized HD LCD, the Wii still provides good entertainment and even has the mrs playing games (thanx Ninty). But end of the day PC (lappy) i still my Primary gaming platform.

About 50% of the people who Play Halo 2 on Live! are using the original Xbox so no they have not picked up a 360 yet. This is why Bungie are releasing the new Halo 2 pack exclusively to the 360 so that those other 500 000 Halo 2 players will pick up a 360.

Sony has suprised everyone with it's EU launch and the war is truly on now.
We will begin to see a winner after christmas this year.

My forecasts, the Wii will start to slow down in February next year, the Xbox 360 will marginally beat the PS3 over the Christmas sales worldwide.

By the middle of next year we will see that this war has turned into a 2 horse race between PS3 and 360 with no clear worldwide winner ever being declared.

I'm not sure that you understand the magnitude of the phenomenon that is the Halo franchise.

Halo 2 was the highest grossing release in entertainment history. As Gavin said, loads of the original Halo fans are still playing on their xbox 1's waiting for Halo 3 to come out.

Nevertheless, I'll modify my claim: Halo 3 will sell another 1 million 360's, not a couple of million.

As for the Wii, i'm gonna be more postive about it's future, it's much more powerful than the PS2 which is still selling really well at that low price point. I think the fact that it has already shifted 6 million units will force developers to tap into that market and such will continue to see titles produced. The only gripe i currently have about Ninty is the Wii's games pricing, it's priced too closely to the bigger Console's games, and the Virtual Console games pricing.

I agree fully with this, I already have a PS3 and Wii, and theres a very good chance my next cell phone upgrade is gonna contain a 360 ;)

I think people are still used to their "Old ways", that's why their buying the PS3's... I personally wouldn't buy a PS3 for R6500 when I can get a XBox for R3700, when the diffs are as follows..:

1. - PS3 has a stronger screencard (roundabout 11% stronger Nvidia)
2. - XBox has the stronger CPU (AMD vs PS3's unique Intel) (3% stronger)

This is according to an article @ www.tomshardware.com
