Alternative is a cheaper - car charger for your laptop unless

In light of (haha) the recent eskom blackouts I have been investigating solar power solutions so i can remain online no matter what. There are lots of turnkey solutions available, mostly from US suppliers and expensive. Some are really nice like this one:

Which has enough juice to run your notebook and charge its battery.

For the technically inclined, there are also some great g33k sites out there with schematics to build charge controllers, so then it would just be a matter of purchasing a couple of 30 watt solar panels and you will be all set for less money.

I have a house on the south coast (although I live in Canada), and when i get back home I am going to stock up on solar kit to bring back to SA.

There are also some great home-sized wind generating options, kits and plans on the net that I will be looking into to keep the fridge running as well. We already have solar water heating.
 
That is such a cool idea! I want one of those. I wonder how pricey they are.
 
do they make cigarettes lighter chargers for laptops for the car? is it possible?
considering the amount of time one sits in traffic due to load shedding it would be nice to charge up your lap top.

also for sales guys who run around all day it would be cool.
