Hello Fellow posties - I need your help/input.

On windows XP home edition it is possible to create users for you machine. On your personal folders it is possible restric other people to be able to enter those personal folders. This works fine when the PC is fine, but should anything happen and you were to move that drive to another hdd on your machine and reinstall XP - you are unable to reopen those folders which you secured.

Even if you recreate the User information exactly the same as it was the first time down to the last letter in the password - you are still unable to gain access to those folders.

I am not sure of this, but I think i've seen on XP Professional that you have an option called Take Ownership, to take ownership of a folder, but XP Home doesnt have this facility.

Has any of you come across this before, or are there any recommendations?

well, if there's no way to take ownership, the only thing i can think of atm, is to put the hdd in a XP pro PC, take ownership, and give everyone full control...

but i'm sure there must be a another way to do it...

Maybe you guys are gonna laugh now.... but when you do CTRL ALT DEL DEL to log on as Administrator... It says that this has been disabled.

I don't understand how that works, because I could do this before but now the User you create with the Administrator rights is the only Admin you can do on the O/S.

Has anyone come across this.

i also thought of doing the XP professional machine solution, but I only have a Laptop with Professional on (from the office) and there no space for extra HDD there. Only option is to get an external HDD casing and put the drive in there, but alas I dont have one of those either.

Read this dude ;)

No offense, but stop thinking dude, you're confusing everyone :D :p
If you are a administrator, you are one. You don't need to log into the admin account. Your profile should just be set to administrator and not limited

lol - I am; ok maybe I am, thats why I am asking for advice here. However when Person XXX is set to Administrator, there is no Take Ownership Option. But ok .... I havnt read the link you gave me, so I'll first go and read and then come apologies for not reading it first before posting.

hahaha - was that confusing too?

Reboot the PC, before you get to the windows loading splash screen push f8, this should give you the option to boot into safe mode whereby you can access the admin account.

Listen everyone - THANK YOU

I used the instructions on the Microsoft site and it directed me to disabling the "Use Simple file Sharing" option on the [Explorer] Tools > Options |Views| dialog.

After doing this, I had the security options where I could assign ownership. I was able to get into the folder.

This Rocks - tx a mil.

Hey ZabZoo,

Try this http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm. This should give you access to the security tab and its functions, so you should be able to take ownership of the file.

Cheers

There is an interesting bit of information on that page -

"WARNING: Adjusting the permissions on a drive, file or folder can lock even the Administrator account out of that drive/file/folder. Deny Permissions take precedence over Allow Permissions, regardless of your group membership. Administrators are members of the User's group, by default. Uncheck Allow, rather than using Deny."

I've never been able to really understand the difference between Allow/Un-Allw and UnDeny/Deny (in a manner of speaking).
