Media player 10 and 11 are dvd players and it is free from microsoft and they are compatible with Vista.

Actually it is the OS that includes the DVD codecs, not Media Player. If you dont have Media Center version (Home Premium or Ultimate) you dont got it.

Not 100% sure (using Ultimate) but ffdshow may do the trick ... best Divx codec too. Choose SSE version for your Dell's Centrino Duo or above.

It's not the OS but the media player that need to be switched on. Goto tools and then choose options and select DVD.

Nope, I beg to differ ... install a clean copy of XP Pro with latest Media Player 11 and see how many DVDs you can play.

Remember DVD is a licensed format & MS have to pay royalties, and they only do this with Media Center editions. Why do you think pay-for programs like Power DVD exist, if WinXP played DVD natively, they would not be in business.

Many DVD related programs such as Nero etc. or whatever is bundled/pre-installed with your DVD drive/writer includes a DVD codec so most dont even notice that standard versions of Win don't play DVD natively.

VLC plays DVDs for free, I believe. There are other FREE DVD players too.

Dell should have pre-loaded a free OEM DVD player (WinDVD or PowerDVD) because
your machine has a DVD drive. The same thing happened with my Acer notebook,
I got PowerDVD OEM version for free.

I got WinDVD with my HP Notebook, but I hate the program (it takes too long to open).I use windows media player instead.
VLC is good too.
