PS3 sales plummet by 82 percent in the UK

Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent.

Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including GAME, Gamestation, Play.com, Asda and HMV.

A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent."

Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK.

"We publish the first week figures because there's such a clamour for them that we can't keep it a secret," said the spokesperson.

This week's software charts revealed that sales of the top two PlayStation 3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, had dropped by over 60 per cent.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe declined to comment.

Anyone suprised by this? I mean a console isn't just something you by every week. The slump in after-release sales shouldn't be newsworthy.
 
What it does imply is that only about 165 000 people wanted a PS3, unlike the previous two consoles which where sold out for months...

This is very bad news for Sony
 
What it shows was the hype Sony managed to generate. Have to wait for a few more weeks to judge the sales figures. A shortage in the market can easily be engineered. It was something Sony didn't do and wanted to make sure there's plenty of stock after Europe's launch was delayed.
 
Price is the biggest barrier to entry for the PS3. Even in first world countries the console is priced well above the other options...
 
It dropped from 165 000 last week? I doubt SONY was aiming at keeping up that rate.

The problem is that it is not selling out, or even coming close to selling out. They have sold 165 000 which is a huge amount but they do expect to sell millions in the UK and no one is buying them at this time.... they need to fix that.
 
Next week will be the decider. If the sales figures level off I think they'll do alright if they drop again there are going to be problems for the Japs.
 
I think they wanted to keep that rate sonny boy.
The Wii for instance is still IMMEDIATLY sold out as soon as it hits shelves..
and the wii has sold 2X as much in japan.
 
if they cut their pricing then it could pick up again... oh darn, forgot it was Sony. :p
 
How many of those first week sales were in fact PRE-ORDERS? . I think there was alot of pre-orders that probably artificially inflated the "off-the-shelf" demand. Chances are the fanboys/hardcore gamers all pre-ordered [the console being so delayed meant they would much easier have made up their mind as it was released elsewhere]. So on launch day one huge pre-order delivery was made, which "might" in fact be the total sum of all the people who "really" wanted the console.

As for SA, i think we have a different situation here though. People seem to have gotten used to living in debt and maxing out their multiple credit cards [or too many have too much money]. There's just no way i would buy a PS3 "on impulse" for R7000 in first week of launch. I might take a few months, maybe wait for a price cut, maybe wait for more games..do some serious budgeting BEFORE i actually go buy. The fact that SA sales are so huge on TOP of the inflated SA price is somewhat disturbing.

They sound quite small. But this is a poorer country. I haven't seen any figures that compare the sales to levels of wealth.
 
The point is most SA GAMERS are ps crazy , they just know ps and they just want a ps.. Most dont even know about nintendo..

So i think that is why sa has bought up all the ps3's there were.

I know better and will wait for the day a price cut happens and ffXIII is out.

Thats a bit of a rash statement saying most SA gamers only know PS.

Most gamers I know (and i know quite a few) cut their teeth on C64's Atari's Sega, Nintendo etc..

Maybe the young kiddies will think that PS is the be all and end all of gaming, but I think you'll find that the majority of gamers are quite aware of things outside Sony.

just wondering... i know us that grew up with "tv games" know of nintendo yes..so sad the rest doesn't

At the end of they day most sa dudes own a ps ...
 
Nintendo didn't really setup shop here as well as those 'family computer's.
 
If i'm not mistaken nintendo tried with n64 and gamecube and DS but every moron just ignored it and bought a ps. and DONT tell me you did not know that it was here, you ARE LYING.
 
IMHO the biggest problem Nintendo faced was that it had a certain image, that of the Mario/Zelda type.

PS had(has) many excellent sporting titles that, if I believe correctly, weren't ported to N64/Gamecube etc..

Personally the only Mario game I ever enjoyed was Mario Kart and Zelda et al don't appeal to me. I would rather have a console with strong sport titles, hence PS2. Even in the UK n64's and gamecubes were pretty scarce when compared to PS2.

Nintendo were victims of their own success till Wii came out (Mario this, Mario that) same as Sega with Sonic.
 
Well ok .. i always knew nintendo wont do well here , because we are a SPORT country. but remember the days when all we had was nintendo (aka tv games) it did excellent and the games were super. and get this they still are , sa nintendo just does not import them to us. If you actually make a effort to import yourself you will see the games are just as fun and there is only 1 zelda games per nintendo generation and about 6~7 mario games ..the rest ? games we dont get .
