Hardware and adsl line for low traffic website

Assuming battery backup and website administration is correctly taken care of, can anyone give any pointers for the hardware specs for hosting a low traffic site with the following website traffic usage, email traffic is irrelevant only website traffic.

Unique visitors:200 monthly
Megabytes transferred: 22mb on average, max 35mb (per month)
Hits: Average 3500, Max 7000 per month
Number of page requests: Average 4000, Max 8000 per month
Average Bandwidth per user: 190Kb/visit


Is a adsl line sufficient to handle this kind of data, telkom 384kb ? I'm guessing not ?

With an max upstream of 128kbps I'm thinking it's not going to be nippy. Besides - for the fraction of the cost of ADSL you could have it hosted for you and not have to worry about it.

I am worried about the performance, hence the post and stats.
The line is already active, so I thought of rather maybe doing my own hosting, save a few pennies and have more options open to me.
To do the email side of things I was thinking of Google Apps for small business http://www.google.com/a/smallbiz/, I have read excellent reviews about it. (still in Beta though and I think you still need to get an invite)

My hosting provider is really good, but has silly restrictions like the number of mysql databases.
I don't really know if the stats mentioned will result in sluggish performance, or if the telkom adsl is reasonable enough to do this hosting on? I suppose a test is in order!

Dont host on adsl. bad bad bad idea.

I'm sure I could work something out for you that's cheap and worry-free.

I wrote a web-forum last year with everything this forum incorporates plus the ability to upload pictures to the web-page, both avatars and high resolution pictures (IE 1600x1200 and higher) which could then be viewed and I only used a single SQL database (with tables for forums,threads,posts and pictures). Honestly I don't see why you would need more than one database unless security is of VITAL importance and even then it's probably overkill. The speed DOES NOT improve using more than one database unless their hosted on different machines. As far as I'm concerned it's bad practice using more than one database of the same type (IE 2 or 3 SQL DB's) for the SAME server side application, if in theory the one database can be compromised there is no reason to believe the other can't be as well.

As has been mentioned hosting on a ADSL account is a BIG BIG NO NO!!
Furthermore you (no offense) seem to have no experience (hosting) which means you're almost guaranteed to have much more downtime than the hosted option as well as possible security problems.

The reason I would want more than 1 mysql database would be:
1) To keep apart my own applications back end from say Joomla's mysql content.
2) Possibly host another really tiny site which keeps track of odds and ends.
3) Keep my options open.

You are 100% right , but then again, I wasn't an expert at swimming in the deep end of the pool and Ryk Neethling probably at some time wasn't either.

I think I'll rather go with a cheaper hosting service for now, cause line speed will be a killer.
