Alright so I plug my ethernet cable into the xbox and out of the blue it has stopped working...
eg: No link light / no light on router or pc.
So where can I take my xbox to have this checked out...? Any repair people in Durbs?
Anyone had this problem?

Is the router working?
Press the windows button + pause> go to device manager> check if the network card/controller is enabled ;)

If it’s still under warranty just swap it

On the topic of networking, I just bought myself a 360 today and have been trying to connect it to my laptop running Vista, through the ethernet cable but having some trouble. My laptop detects it and opens media center to add an extender and asks for 8 digit key.now on the Xbox i went to 'Test media connection' and it fails with the IP address setup. Does anybody know how to set it up?.
Thanks ;)

Seems like it ;) If you don't try, you won't know :p Remember the proof of purchase ;)

now on the Xbox i went to 'Test media connection' and it fails with the IP address setup.Very much depends if you configured the IP info on Vista/X360 manually or left on Auto. If Auto, the X360 is probably complaining it was not offered IP info by a DHCP server.
This does not neccessarily mean thing wont work, both Vista/X360 will fall back to an 'address of last resort' (random IP from the 169.254.XX.XX range), and communication will occur using those addresses.

Proof of purchase? I picked it up and ran when it was so busy during the xmas period ;)
And then the xbox is flashed as well, rofl!

That was going to be my suggestion as well Gambit.. :)
I've done it before and cursed and swore at a hub and a nic in a pc that wasn't working..
spent HOURS trying to trace it... then thought wait, i haven't tried another cable and hey presto alles started working... I felt v stupid...

Ok ive tried 2 cables, from xbox to pc, xbox to router, xbox to laptop, xbox to laptop.
Same cables, pc to laptop, laptop to pc and both worked... But i will get a third and try 2morrow.

wouldn't the Xbox to router connection need a different cable to the one supplied with the xbox?
The cable that came with mine (pro package) basically enabled me to connect my xbox directly to my PC which means it's probably a PATCH cable (or something like that) i.e. direct connection like PC to PC or PC to Xbox is possible.
If you intend connecting to a router I would imagine you would need a "normal" network cable. i.e PC to HUB
I could be wrong I'm no expert!

You'll probably find that the XBox's NIC is auto-mdix, meaning it doesn't care if you use a patch cable or a crossover.
I've used the supplied cable to hook up to a router with no hassles.

yea the new xbox 360 enables you to use both patch/crossover whilst the original xbox didnt..

So that is where I keep getting that address from, thanks man... I thought my router was going nuts :D....

Well that might be why your network port is poked.... No one officially repairs the Xbox 360. If you have a problem you take it back to the place you got it from with a M$ reference number and they replace it instantly. That is unless you voided the warranty to play pirated games that is...
Sorry you are ***** out of luck.

Hehe, Game are too stupid to figure out if warranty is void.
M$ reference number...? Do we have a call center in South Africa that I can phone to get this?

So that is where I keep getting that address from, thanks man... I thought my router was going nuts :D....Maybe a little ... in a home network, its generally the broadband/ADSL router that acts as the DHCP server, so if yours is not dishing out addresses properly it may misconfigured ... unless of course you've turned the functionality off on purpose.

Yeah of course.... just not sure what it is at the moment :D It should be on the side of the box.
Anyway, when you phone them they will ask you a bunch of questions and when your flashed Xbox arrives at Xbox HQ they might not be so happy.

I have a router that has been reconfigured to act as an Access Point which bridges to my Telkom Marconi Router/DHCP server.
It is not stable though and when it loses it's connection my Xbox gets a weird IP address that is not from any of my ranges...
