Leopard to ship in October

iPhone has already passed several of its required certification tests and is on schedule to ship in late June as planned. We can’t wait until customers get their hands (and fingers) on it and experience what a revolutionary and magical product it is. However, iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned. While Leopard's features will be complete by then, we cannot deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us. We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing, and ship Leopard in October. We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we're sure we've made the right ones. [Apr 12, 2007]

Now I will have to load bootcamp beta - thought I would wait 2 months and install Leopard with bootcamp support on a new HDD.

On this issue (hijacking thread warning!) - Can I transfer my existing OSX installation to a new HD using the OSX install disks - iirc there is an option to do this in the utilities on the OSX installation disk??

I use superduper to clone the disks. You could also do it from the terminal using rsync.

Unless you want a clean install.

EDIT - do you have an external firewire case?

Getting one with my HD, hopefully, today but USB2.

I try to steer clear of terminal - many linux installations buggered because of it!!:o

Pity - can you borrow one with firewire? You can do a migration using firewire (where you copy your old apps etc over into a clean install) but I'm not sure if you can do that with usb2.

Otherwise SuperDuper is probably your best bet.

EDIT - looks like you can do a migration via USB2 but it wont be as fast. If you're happy with your current install cloning is the the way to go imo.
 
Can you disable the new Backup feature? I don't really fancy the idea of
having all my HDD space kept by numerous large MOV files I made
and deleted on purpose. :)

I'm sure it will be configurable.
 
I've been wondering about this too. I'm getting a bigger disc for my Mini, and, even though this is my first OSX installation and I've poked around with it more than I should, I'm not ready for a reload just yet.

I'm quite happy do go the terminal + rsync way. Done this many times on Linux.

Any gotchas?

How do you make the disc bootable?

I tried the cloning way but with the USB2 it was going to take like forever so I just did a new installation and copied my music files over which was only 11 gig. I am actually glad I did that. Using the USB2 drive now (which is still bootable) for installing stuff I want to look at but not particularly needed. Works like a charm.

You can do it with rsync - not sure which folders you need to bless, etc. Why not use superduper? Its free :)

Its fun taking the mini apart isnt it - got your putty knife? :D

I've got two! When I first opened it I had nothing to shove in after lifting the one side, so when I tried to open the other side, the first side would shut again. I actually bought a 1GB dimm and the superdrive as well - I figure I don't want to have to open it up more than I absolutely have to.

Good luck then :) The site says "You can download SuperDuper! v2.1.4 right now and back up and clone your drives for free — forever!" so the trial should do what you want and it is defiantly worth the money should you decide you like it. I love tinkering too, just not with my backups :o

Two - intel or ppc? I used a laminated card for the other side. The thin edge seemed to do the trick nicely.

I don't really have anything crucial on it yet. Just don't want to interrupt my torrents for too long :-)

I'll give rsync a go, and if it doesn't work first time around, I'll just install fresh on the new disc. Azureus doesn't take that long to install....

Two putty knives.

The Mini is PPC tho - got old stock at a very nice price when the Intels came out. I'm kinda regretting not buying the 12" PowerBook they had on display too. It was top of the range with all the goodies, for 10k. Would have been perfect for my purposes.

One of my colleagues says a metal egg lifter works well too. I haven't thought of that - mine's plastic tho, so it won't help me much.

There is still considerable demand for the 12" PB. I'm guessing that they didnt want to cannibalise MB sales by introducing a 12" MBP but I know of a few who were disappointed.
 
I for one am disappointed. If the MBP was available in a 12" my HP would have een on eBay already.

I don't think a 12" MBP would take many sales from the MacBook. OK, it will take a couple, but Apple would still be selling the notebook (just for more money), so I don't see the problem. The MacBooks are nice, but still to big to my taste - they're as wide as my 15" (square) HP.

I'm a screen whore - I almost bought the 15" MBP in lieu of the 17" but I would have regretted it immediately.

A 13" MB would be a nice addition for when I was travelling though. :)
 
I like my real estate too, but I need something I can use on the train in the morning. 15" is just too big. And get too heavy after a fair bit of walking.
