Tell me about it!
The only prob with Linux is games but I don't have time to play many these days anyway. Replacing my host OS with Ubuntu 7.04 once I get this version. They have sorted out a lot of the media stuff. I do my development in a vm anyway so will just move those VM's across to the linux OS. I got tired of the MS activation crap.

It took too long for them to come last time (5 weeks). Easier to download with a local only account from the local mirror. If you do get them shipped, try and get a lot and give them to people.

Good plan.

If you have a gig of RAM then install it on a VM and play around first. I am sure you will be supprised how far it has come since the early days. If you don't have VMware, download VMWare player from VMware and use one of the many online VMX generators to create one for you. You will be able to do almost everything with VMware player that you can with full vmware except snapshots etc.

looks like it's only 697Mb download
I downloaded SUSE 10 and it took 5 cd images..... what is more in SUSE to make it so much bigger?
Want to use linux as fileshare server, backups etc. mainly...

My download completed overnight, and I have since installed over my Edgy install on my laptop, and so far, its looking very nice... No issues during installation, and entire process took about 20mins...

I haven't worked on any Linux distro before, so I hope if and when I receive the disks that it will be easy enough.
As far as my limited scope goes, I know if you don't have internet, you can't use Linux, updates, new features, compatibility all that, so it goes to say that Windows is better in that regard ;) :p :D

There is no diff betweent the two if you don't have internet for updates, new features etc. Both use internet to download those. For compatibility Win is better but if you do happen to link a machine to the internet, Linux is far less likely to be snorted by some virus. I remember reading that ther average time for a clean, newly connected windows box, to be infected with a virus/worm/adware when connected to the internet is about 45 minutes.
As far as the available applications go, although there are far more windows apps out there, there is a massive amount of free applications available through the Ubuntu package manager that are available with a internet connection free of charge. Check the box and Ubuntu takes care of the rest for you. No need to worry about compatibility etc.

Like I said, I've "never" worked on Linux before, so I wouldn't really know, that was just my first glimpse of the Linux world.
Sure, Windows needs updates, but if you work offline, you don't really need the updates, is Linux the same? ;) :p :D

You don't need another machine. What about the machine you are typing this message on? You don't have to replace your windows, just run VMWare under windows and install/run linux in the vmware. That way you get the best of both worlds for now. You can play with Linux whenever you want and still run windows.

I see. Cool beans. I shall give it a go this weekend.
I see. Cool beans. I shall give it a go this weekend.
A couple of tricks/hints.
1) It very nice to use a VM to test out any software you don't know much about. That way if the env is trashed you just go back to a clean VM. I use this for Windows VMs all of the time.
2) MS wants an activation for a VM if you change the VM memory size so create a VM and then activate it with the amount of mem you think you are going to use. If you are going to change the mem size, make a copy of the wpa.dbl file so that you don't have to keep activating when switching back and forth.
3) If you are using VM Player, make a copy of your VM once you have done a clean install (A snapshot for VMWare proper). That way you can always go back to your "clean" VM. You can even make multiple copies and use them for different reasons. I know of people using a VM for Office, another for development etc. Then you don't have to rebuild your XP every 6 months, only go back to the "clean: VM and install your apps.
4) It's a nice way to get around trials for a little bit. Use the software, then go back to a clean environment and use it again :)
5) It allows you to switch to a new PC / hard drive as easy as pie. Install the clean OS on your new PC, copy your VMs and you are up and running.
6) Get the full blown VMWare workstation. It's the most awesome piece of software available :) We use it for testing software and you can do something like:
Clean XP -> SP1 -> SP2 -> IE7
All with the same vm, only using snapshots to mark each point in time. If you want to test something, you just chose the snapshot and test on that environment.

Hmmm... seems there is something wrong with my downloaded iso - how large is it? (I have 670,068,168) It starts up but I only get the install screen. Trying to install into a VM machine. Something must have gone wrong with my d/load. Ran 6.10 without problems.

Check the MD5 of your ISO against that on the server.
a2b159599b69cea51371eee1ec5feda6 *ubuntu-7.04-desktop-amd64.iso
e296e3468358789904097fc8df29609a *ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso

1ad3c003dbcbe27b3265da23b886d047 *kubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso
Also remember that you can't run a 64 bit version in a 32 bit OS if thats what you tried so if you have WinXP 32bit, you will need to run the desktop-i386.iso

OK, thanks - If I open the md5sum.txt file on the d/load it looks something like this
90537599d934967f4de97ee0e7e66e6c ./dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Release
c53152b488a9ed521c96fdfb12a1bbba ./dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages
ba9a035c270ba6df978097ee68b8d7c6 ./dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
.......
so not sure where to look.
I'm running ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso
EDIT: Never mind - used digestIT to calculate the dloaded checksum and it comes up with 87ad66aa0a83cab3e34b28a0e9ca3bcc ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso. So the download is buggered - will try and d/load it again this weekend with a d/load manager.
Any recommendations for a free download manager - I heard GetRight is OK.

Just some mirrors (local aswell, just for interest sake !)
http://za.releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/
http://ftp.up.ac.za/pub/linux/distributions/ubuntu/ubuntu-release/7.04/
ftp://ftp.is.co.za/ubuntu-releases/7.04
The second site is currently updating, they say after the weekend it should be sorted (IE Try it from 23 April onwards)
EDIT: UP FTP is now up and running !

You need an MD5 application to get the hash on the file you have downloaded. Then you will do something like:
D:\Downloads\Linux\Ubuntu\7.04>md5 < ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso
E20A7648F33EF9F56B1B89312626EC21 -
Which is wrong. Can someone else check the MD5's from some downloads on the local mirror. All of my hashes are wrong.

I am redownloading from the IS mirror. My ISO is not correct. If anyone else has a copy of ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso could they confirm the MD5. Something wierd is going on here. I have completed four of the ISO's and every one has the wrong MD5. Also, the update date on the local mirror for the ISO's is 15th where they were only released on the 18th.

Maybe check overseas download sites to see what date is on those ISO's.
EDIT: Checked on http://ftp.wayne.edu/linux_distributions/ubuntu/7.04/ and the iso's are also dated the 15th.

The ones on IS are dated the 20th. Will have ubuntu-7.04-desktop-i386.iso redownloaded in about 4 hours time and will then compare the two. The MD5 hashes are definitely wrong on my set. Either the hashes are in the MD5SUM file on the servers are wrong or the files downloaded wrong or the local mirror has the wrong files.

Damn - you think I should kill my download - 30% done from za.releases?
I can't imagine that two local mirrors would both have it wrong. I would say keep going.
The ones from IS seem to be correct. I would advise everyone to check their downloads to make sure the MD5 hash is correct.

Yar, you can upgrade only from 610
So all my 604 settings were scrapped and so i'm onto 704.
Still hate the bloody password kuk. I dont need it anywhere on my PC or at any time. Anyway its on my tomboy notes to find the copy/paste (lol) disabling password stuff.
Amarok was a bit buggy in 704, but i sorted that out......
