Cape Town - The City of Cape Town has formally invited residents to submit proposals for street-name changes.

They also will be able to suggest new names for public places, natural areas and council-owned buildings, facilities and artefacts, said the city in a statement on Monday.

The deadline for suggestions is May 11.

The statement said that in "sharp contrast to the controversy in other South African cities", Cape Town had a comprehensive policy which gave the public a large say in the process.

'Replace offensive names'

However the final decision lay with the council, which would be advised by a yet-to-be-named panel of experts.

"They (the names) should strengthen community identity, replace offensive or controversial names and promote improved place orientation and recognise the cultural diversity of Cape Town," said the statement.

The city was rocked by controversy in 2001 by a plan by then-mayor Peter Marais to rename Adderley and Wale streets after former presidents Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk.

Cape Town is not to be outdone by Durban, as they also have ability to waste money and to offend minorities. I propose Cape Town residents first rename Koeberg to EIBI "Eish I Broke It". Seriously I would take every single name in Cape Town and submit a proposal, to rename the streets to the exact same name, to demonstrate the childishness of renaming schemes.

Take Durban for example, I think it would be very difficult to find 1% of people in Durban offended by the name. It is easier to waste money than to build homes for the poor and hungry.

Take note news24 headlines read "CT joins name-change game".

i concur. Changing the name doesn't help much, infact its only a waste of money, and the chances are good that your just going to make alot of people angry or confused.

It costs alot of loot to change a name of a street or building, rather use that money and organize money for the homeless children or food for the poor.
 
We should change Cape Town to something meaningful like, oh I don't know, City on the Cape or city by the mountain by the sea. But in a language that 99% of the world can't pronounce properly. Just to show the world how African the city really is.

Why change a street name when we can change the whole place? ;)

And where are the forumites that always say name changing is a plot by the ANC to erase white culture? It seems the DA seems to think that it acceptable.:D

Cape Town does not fall under the jurisdiction of the DA. Please prove otherwise if I'm incorrect.
 
City of Capetown is DA controlled however they rely on budget from provincial and national gobermint.
 
DA opposes name changes, so somewhere there is "'n slang in die gras".
 
"die slang" is provincial government (ANC) who hold the purse strings.

also think the DA has to keep the peace with alliance partners

If only the nobbers that consider name changes would at least be consistent ...

Why is Soweto not renamed yet? I believe it is because the minority would not object or feel injured by such an action.

Theres one in Bellville too, I went to the 7-11 there once. Awful place :) :confused:
 
holy crap,I think cape town is a neutral name,and the only names they wanna change is like riebeek street and other nederlanse names.I guess all afrikaaner names will wanna be changed to more pleasant names,maybe african meaningz or pure english names..
imagine what long street will be called in xhosa..lol
 
We should introduce an IP domain like way of naming address items. We could have something like <country>.<city>.<suburb>.<street>.<building>.<door>

We could then introduce a DNS server service whereby people friendly names would be mapped to the IP address. With the restriction that an IP address could only be registered once and that a people friendly name could only be registered once, such a schema would allow anyone to assign any nae they liked to an address which would then translate into any other person's name preference for the same address.

Or one could call everything 42.
