Also heard rumours that the pass mark for maths at schools is going to be lowered to around 30% next year??? Anyone seen anything about this or have a reliable source

Matriculants in 2008 will need three "E" and four "F" symbols to pass the new national senior certificate.

This means a candidate must get 40% in his home language, in life skills and another subject and a 30% minimum in his other subjects to pass.

These requirements have just been given to schools. Principals said many parents were concerned and wondered about the standard of the new matric.

A candidate must take seven subjects. The compulsory subjects are two languages (home language and an additional first language), life skills and mathematics or mathematical literacy.

These marks are also the minimum requirements for admission to study for a higher certificate.

For a diploma, a candidate will need the minimum requirement plus four subjects - apart from life skills - passed at level 3 (40%-49%).

Lets hope after all the name changing is over the government will start focussing on stuff like education

This doesn't help anyone. Governments actions keep point to how they want to keep the majority of our population uneducated an uninformed. I guess it is easier to rule that way.

As long as the general public are village idiots it is easy for the gvt to control them. Its all part of a bigger plan. Now the blacks cant blame the white ppl for there lack of education.

The rich will become richer and poor poorer. We who have the skills will just be paid more and more and more....

And the poor will continue to work for minimal wage our gardens and roads.

Well the pass mark for Maths now is 33.3%

According to some forumites it is quite acceptable to blame everything on "the injustices of the past" for as twice as long as apatheid lasted. so we're looking at what??... around the next 80 years odd???

We inherited an apartheid colonial state, which was illegitimate and structured to serve the interests of a white minority. To perpetuate itself, it relied on repressive apparatus on a massive scale and on an aggressive policy towards its neighbors. It used public resources to buy off collaborative strata from amongst the black majority through its Bantustan, Tricameral parliament and black local authority policies.

Part of its most potent weapon was keeping the blacks uneducated (Bantustan education), poor (Limitations on who could have a lincence to operarate a business in the townships, and no blacks could own a business in the CBD's) and in a state of perpertual serfdom. This was carried -out through several degrees of repression for several decades.

Surely no sane man can think that this could be undone in 10 years. I do not know the exact time it would take to undue these injustices but I guess it will have to take time.

luckily our gvt is spending huge amounts on education and NOT changing the names of streets, travelling all over the world, etc...

The dumb will stay dumb, that is the way the gvt likes it, easier to control

The old apartheid died a long time ago, even before the new regime took office. 10 years is a very long time to achieve anything. Compare it to the5 year plan of the following:

How long does SA need to transform? We've asked this question and have received the answer "It will never end".

In the 21st century, 15 years is easily enough time to achieve a huge transformation in ANY country. One cannot claim that since apartheid was around for 50 years (or so) that it would take that time to 'undo it'. That is simply illogical. But then logic is not the strongpoint of ANC supporters.

The reality is that the ANC regime have no incentive to hurry the process. For every day they can remind the populous of the injustices of the past - the more they can garner support from voters. That's what this is all about. (Just see how many "struggle" themes are on TV and in the press! Herr Goebels would be very proud!)
