His action, he told his terrified victims, was motivated by the desire to grab the attention of the media and government so that "something could be done about the high level of crime in the country".

He had parked a silver Datsun Stanza outside the building in Vermeulen Street and told a security guard he was there to see Barry Bateman, the reporter he had spoken to earlier in the day.

'Cops tried to go up the stairs and he fired at them'
The man's attention now moved to Phiri. "He pointed his gun at me and said the old government had trained him to shoot black people like me. He was reeking of alcohol as he went on complaining about crime in the country," he said.

"He said the current government was doing nothing about crime and he wanted to know what was going to happen now. He then looked around and said that with his past training he knew there would be snipers outside."

Kinda reminds me of fighting for peace. I suppose hijacking for no crime also goes with some people.
 
He wanted to make a high-profile example. Probably believes that too many in the media are isolated from crime. After all, the press does tend to go on about criminals' rights and tolerance.

However, the man is deeply disturbed. Needs a few replacement screws there.
 
Reminds me of that chap holding home affairs hostage for his ID.
