Ola...

friend worx for company X's I.T dept.

they have got a 256k leased line...

now they are complaining about slow browsing/speeds.

their SAIX network usage graph clearly shows someone is leeching alot!

its not p2p as the upload section is pretty calm...so i can maybe also rule out spyware.

they run ISA 2006 -but erm *cough* don't have jack experience with it..so they don't know if it can LIST users and their active activities on the web.

since it is 200 users..installing netlimiter is a bit of a shlep.

i was thinking of trying microtiks' the dude..but if anyone else got a MS way of pinpointing the bastard who is d/l'ing , i'd appreciate 2cents

thx

ISA generates log files of usage... simply run the reports it comes with.
I made some custom reports to suit our needs, but needs SQL Reporting services, and ISA to be setup to log to SQL.

I'd go with the built-in reports, can state top 10 users, etc.

Edit: talking about ISA 2000, presume they haven't gone backwards with the reporting ability ;)

ntop runs on windows too :)
Ntop will show you per IP

I dont think the dude will help in what you want to do here.

oh 200 users im not surprised the line is maxed out.

For that 256kb line they could get one or more 4mb ADSL lines.

Is the stability really worth it for the terrible speeds they must get on that? Its not like ADSL goes down every second day or anything..

256kb for 200 people.... an allocation of 1K per person :-P Anyone one person watching the cricket scores is leeching :-)

Also keep in mind that outbound/inbound mail chews up bandwidth.

We chucked out our 64k Diginet line in favour of a 512k adsl line.

After we moved the office, we upped the speed from 512 to 1Mb.

We use said adsl line for emails, voip, web browsing, ftp transfers and remote administration of our client's sites.

ISA server should have the ability to report on bandwidth usage.

we're in lucky position (NOT! ) to be unable to get ADSL :( ... no port or some other BS says Telscum
so we gotta make do with 256K leased line...... the >R13K per month we pay for it cud have bought several 4Mbps ADSL lines
at least its unlimited and unshaped (ours mostly international traffic too)
also having crap of sum users abusing the line with 'illegal' usage (like porn :D ), which reduces the speed for other guys wanting to work, do research on net, etc.
me put vnc on the comps, so managed to figure out who the guilty ones are, when the speed goes bum, but at least not 200 users .....
