I can't quite tell the mood of this article, the headline is positive, but....

According to him, there is more concern about the government's apparent lack of initiative in resolving the crisis in Zimbabwe, than there is about South Africa's crime crisis.

Xinwa said the government had realised that concrete steps were needed to counter the flood of negative news reports on crime in South Africa.

"We accept that crime levels are too high, although they have been declining overall for the past 10 years.

"However, that's not enough: it gives us a bad name and it became clear that we had to do something."

"We're sure we can decrease the level of crime, but it's important to inform potential investors of our efforts."

Rest assured NOTHING will happen until you admit there is a problem. Crime and HIV.

How about assuring your citizens first!!!???
Crime is going down steadily? What about VIOLENT CRIME SPECIFICALLY?
What about other factors, like police not arriving at the scene when a crime is committed...
What about crimes not being reported properly... or (believe it or not - it has happened to me)... statements not being taken properly....
How many people have had to just about write their own statement to get the point across?

How can they say the crime levels are declining for the past 10 years when 10 years ago the crime levels weren't nearly this bad! :confused:
 
Crime has alwasy been bad for non-whites. White people on the other hand were not exposed to that much crime in the past they were the one being protected.

We all have the right to live in a crime free society. And if us evil white people are just bringing a tad more attention to this major problem, in the end it will benefit all.

poor comment. crime affects us all.

Problem is ppl at the top are protected 24/7 by security guards so they don't notice how bad it is. Ignorant runts.

Guys I actually agree with Lastag on this, crime levels in the townships are very high and there is a lot of violent crime.

Pre 1994 the police did not do much actual law enforcement within the non-white areas and any people of colour found trespassing in white areas were very harshly dealt with.

Also for the most part the crime that occurs in the townships does not make it into the papers.

Lets take Walmer precinct in Port Elizabeth for example, it mainly consist of previously white areas and a small township. Over a given weekend the township will experience more violent crime than all the other suburbs combined. There will be on average four murders a weekend and numerous assaults, assaults etc.
 
Agree - I agree with that comment - even today, there are horrendous crimes being committed daily in the poorer and predominantly black communities...
The question is...
WHY SHOULDN'T WEALTHIER PEOPLE BE ABLE TO ADVOCATE FOR POORER FOLK, OR WHITE FOR BLACK FOR THAT MATTER?
Which ever way you look at it, crime is an issue. The issue is not whether or not it will effect our world cup ticket sales!!!
 
R/SGT has just proven my statement that people of colour have always been affected by crime more than white people.

i've got a plan for fighting crime...actually a few, quite simple
- bullet in the head
- noose around the neck
- poison in the vein
- axe through the neck

All that they are trying to do is cover up the crime rate increase over the last 15 years, the government has failed in reducing the crime rate and are too ashamed to admit it.

There is merit in your comments, but the way I see it is the street wise criminals know full well that there's a virtual collapse of policing and prosecution, and hence no deterent and an escalation in the crime rate (not a decline as the government spin portrays).

"Crime has alwasy been bad for non-whites." - well nows the time for them to be doing something about it.

It's sad that crime is related to race, to me it's more of a class thing. In countries all around the world, people of the same colour commit crime against each other, the only thing that seperates them is their background and respect for each other.

There is a flaw in that logic. If the person who is meant to take the report down (and I tend to "dumb" my wording down if the other person seems to have a problem with multi-syllable words), then what about the person who is meant to read and act on it? What's to say they can understand it any better?

Now, add that to the fact that, when writing it yourself, you may tend to not "dumb it down", and you can see the real extent of the problem.

Before we get into the "English may only be his third language, and can you speak Xhosa? debate", let us not forget that everyone should be afforded the right to speak with a public servant who is at least conversant in their home language (being one of the official 11 of course).
And in the realms of emergency services, even more so.

<sarcasm>Ahhhh, that makes crime more acceptable.</sarcasm> the Criminal BEE association was given a mandate to "Rob and Rape" in a demographically responsible manner.

Crime has allways been high - but it still does not make it acceptable.

Tell that to a 6yr old girl who was raped that "Crime has allways been there, and its all the girls fault for being in the wrong place at the wrong time"

Its a constitutional right to have safety.
