London - England and Australia remain contingency options to host the 2010 World Cup in case South Africa fails to meet organisational deadlines, Fifa president Sepp Blatter said.

South Africa will become the first African nation to host football's showpiece event in three years' time, but reports of delays in stadium construction work have reportedly threatened hopes of the tournament being staged there.

Fifa remain confident that all necessary facilities will be ready in time but Blatter clearly feels Fifa need to keep options open in case there are any unforeseen problems.

Asked if England or Australia were fall-back options should the South African organisation falter, Blatter told the BBC's Inside Sport programme:

"Yes, but there are other countries that are ready to organise tomorrow morning or in two days, or two months, a World Cup. The United States of America, and Mexico, they can do it, Japan, they can do it. They have enough stadia.

"You say England can do it, and I am sure. Spain, they can do it. There are a lot of countries, but they don't need to be ready."

We stand to lose even more money if we don't host it as we have invested allot of money so far.
 
Well at least it is out in the open now. They need to shed this inane African mentality and realise there are only so many 'tomorrows' left to get things done and start focusing on 'today'.

The people who are holding up the building of the stadiums should be ashamed. This event will be good for the country.
 
if we get the world cup i'll be shocked

dont get me wrong i would love it if we had a world cup, but in all honesty we will never be ready

3 years is not so long these days

criminals will be hoping for this world cup imagine all nice ppl they can abuse and rob
 
As far as Cape Town goes they should have offerred FIFA Newlands or nothing imho.
We staged the 1995 Rugby World Cup quite successfully at Newlands.
They could have invested some money into Newlands in the way of extra parking, upgrading of the Rail System and a host of other things. There was so many options available including Athlone Stadium
Why Green Point. Post 2010, how the heck are they going to fill that stadium.

Anyway, too late now, they have destroyed the old stadium and are casting the foundations for the new one at Green Point, so discussing alternatives has gone past the sell by date.

So much for those people who said that this was just a rumour when Der Spiegel revealed it. I can't see how on earth we can stage a successful WC..our public transport system is atrocious, our crime rate is out of control and we're already suffering from lack of investment in infrastructure (i.e. Eskom etc) as well as some 'mild' food/drink shortages (think lack of Carbon dioxide for Coke during the December holidays). And then we have ANC ministers who are setting up BEE companies to make them even richer!
 
Just hope that it works out for SA otherwise our country will fall into oblivion and getting back foreign investor confidence will be very difficult.

I'm sure the gov will do everything they can to make sure it's staged in SA, at the expense of the SA population of course.

I think your thoughts are on the money. :p
The budget will be overrun by four or fivefold.
Building anything in a hurry in this country at the moment costs big bucks.
The builders and building suppliers have had it good for quite some time. :)
They are so used to making better margins in the last few years when Government or whoever wants something done in a hurry it just costs more.

All the infrastructural spending like roads that was put on ice because of political influences, which was cheap to build a few years ago, is just going to cost more and more in the long run.

They have demolished that Golf Course there as well.

Close to 2010, the government will realise that it's not going to make it, in terms of time.
But money can fix everything (look at Athens 2004), so they will pull millions out of the treasury to get everything ready on time.

This is a possibility.

But look at other countries' preparations for similar events before jumping to conclusions. Many places are not ready on time at all. Now, whilst you suggest, perhaps correctly, that this eventuality will be 'solved' by throwing tax-payers' money at it, looking on the bright side, the spin-offs that the country will enjoy when this WC is a success will be huge.

It will make SA a much better investment opportunity and , coupled with the new anti-crime policies that are being propogated throughout the world , should also bring lots more tourism and thus moneyand jobs to this country.
 
We are in Africa guys, so, I'm not discriminating but everything here is slow. Service etc.

Have you ever seen a police run before in this country? All they do is "come back, Come back!"
 
I'm in Bloem for the weekend, if you want to see govt mentality in live-action visit this mess of a place...scary

a] They take 1 year+ to repair a road
b] Half way in expanding a "main" route [by closing half the road] they [the BEE/family contractors] run out of money and leave it just like that...
c] They expand and build malls with no parking and with entrances in the busiest intersection of the city taking months....[equivalent of building a mall on the allandale offramp and closing it for 6 months ]
d] The airport is total chaos if 2 planes land/takes off within 30 minutes of each other.
e] They wait till someone puts up mocking signs like "this broken waterpipe will be fixed before 2010" before even responding...
f] They expand a road in such a hurry [extra lane] that they neglect to take out the light-poles that were next to the original road before expansion [so now there's a pole in the middle of the road...]....


...and these clowns want to host a FIFA World Cup match?????

All I can say is 2010 is going to be an eventful year... I wonder if they are already compiling a list of excuses for 2010 f$ck ups...

Which part of Bloem were YOU in?

I grew up there and now live in Midrand, and trust me Mangaung Municipality service delivery is lot better than City of JHB!

And since when is the developing/building of malls the GVT's responsibility? I was home last week in Bloem and did not come across a road with the street lights in the middle of the road, could you point out which one it was exactly?

It could be worse, South Africa seems to have everything under "relative" control:

The London 2012 budget took an expected leap from around US$5 billion to around $18 billion with some predicting that the higher figure still reflects a significant underestimate. :eek:
