Durban - Shoppers fled and shop-owners hurriedly lowered their shutters as several hundred stick- and knobkerrie-wielding protesters ran down Durban's five-lane Broad street on Tuesday.

All these changes are peeving me off. In CT as well there have been mutterings. But it seems the Durban folk are going woes. From News24.
 
I wonder if the isiXhosa lead ANC leadership are trying to goad the Zulu population into doing something rash by provicating them with this.
 
I am gonna invent a assegai thingy you can mount to your 4X4 and then we can riot too! In style, with aircon - the civilized way.

That should be AmaXhosa. ;)
 
Good, i am glad that the residents of DBN are finally standing up to the ANC.

"History doesn't only belong to the ANC". As a banner said today at the march.

Lol, but he said isiXhosa which AFAIK in my anglo african mind refers to the language. But your point taken.

I wonder if they are still going to drop the word Natal from Kwazulu Natal?
The name is already *510 years old. :rolleyes:

*Vasco da Gama of Portugal saw the coast of Natal on Christmas Day 1497. Christmas in Portuguese is 'Natal', which gave rise to the original name for the region.

Actually a lovely piece of history that could be thwarted by political ends.

I am glad the proposed name changes have come into the spotlight.
As long as it is debated and thought out and people understand the names they change and why.
If names are just changed because it is popular then our Government has learnt nothing from History, which wouldn't surprise me and they/we are doomed to repeat its mistakes.
 
I have a question....These name changes in Durban, did the ANC also ask for the name of Durban to change?

That would be interesting, because according to history, Shaka gave the piece of land on which Durban resides (well I dont think the entire durban), to the british, so that they could trade and so on.

So does that not mean that, Durban actually belongs to the british?

I would say not.
Does pose an interesting historical agreement between the then leader of the Zulu Nation, namely Shaka himself and the party that was led by *Fynn.

Basically if that meeting didn't happen in 1835 what would Durban or Shaka's Grant/Gift look like today.
Whatever the Government of the day chooses, white man's history in South Africa is so intertwined we cannot deny it nor should we. :)
