A few months ago I thrust my Virgin SIM into the deepest, darkest corner of my cupboard and vowed never again to inflict their crappy (so called) internet service on myself again.

This (long) weekend and I dug into the deep dark corner and there staring up at me forlornly was the old VM SIM card, so into the phone it went to see if maybe things had improved.... they hadn't.

In short,
- I can connect
- I am assigned an IP address
- I can ping the DNS server
- I can do DNS lookups using 'nslookup' from the command line
- I cannot connect to any website, "The connection was reset" is all I get in my browser (FF).
- I can trace the IP packets which show my browser sending a "GET HTTP/1.1" to the web server and getting a response packet back from the server. (My IP packet reading skills are unfortunately not sufficient to know why the browser displays the "The connection was reset" after getting this packet back from the web server)

If you have any compassion for my poor little VM SIM card, please save it from being thrust back into the deep dark corner and tell me what you think the problem could be?

well.i know how you feel,As i too through my card away.but i am regretting going to vodacom.I sat today for 2 hours trying to connect on vc network.
Can i say something .F$$#$Ck this cell FU%$$%in networks..
Believe me i am furious,as during the middle of my upload to put my new site up,I deleted my half my html folder contents.
IIIII HHHAATTTEEEE you VVOOOODDDSAACOOOMMMM

I went down to the dude down the road that has Vodacom, it is still slow and buggy, he got right to the end of up-dating his AV and it dropped him.

I loaded up my software and run it on my phone just to show him the difference, I don't think he is a big fan of Vodacom either now

If you could give us some details of what equipment and software you are using it might help

Yer look - ive had very frustrating times using a voda sim. I get by fine with my virgin sim.

Hi Gerald,

I did email you, but the problem is now resolved. I bought a recharge voucher and loaded it and it's now working.

It was just confusing because I still had airtime loaded, but I couldn't use it. Is there some sort of airtime window?

Thanks.

Hi Deneem,

Looks like you beat me to it.

Correct, there is a 90 day Airtime Window.

Regards,

Gerald.

Hi GTVM

Could you possibly allow for the airtime window as well as airtime balance for Prepaid users to be displayed when dialing *101# GTVM

PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY, PLEASE
This would be a great feature

Regards

How much credit did VM steal from you?
(Someone's gotta pay for the office party eh?)

Didn't lose anything, it seems to get 'unlocked' once you recharge.

Had a balance of R57.75 when I was 'locked', went up to R137.75 after an R80 recharge, so no office parties for VM I'm afraid :-)

That's good to know  . Although it is contrary to what they publish.

Good to know that the money is still there, which is way better than MTN, which if you buy a R 15,00 card it goobles it up in about 30 days... and when it says you have until say the 1st of May... it means the morning of that day

VM's smallprint shows the following regarding topup & balance;

4.8 If you choose the prepay account option:
(i) you need to top-up at least once every 90 days to keep your balance, and at least
once every 120 days to keep your phone number and access to services;

Found this VM smallprint PDF last year on VM's website.
