Venezuala Takes Over Oilfields - Where Does SA Fit In?

What do most of you think of this?

Behind him was a huge banner reading "Full oil sovereignty. Road to socialism." Russian-made fighter jets roared overhead and in front of him women pushed toward the stage screaming for him to blow kisses.

Have you noticed how some countries in the world are aligning themselves?

It seems to me that SA is on the same road as Chavez. Full socialism!

I would not be surprised when SA nationalizes the gold mines and all other resources. It may not be pretty but I think it will happen some day.

The headline of the future in SA may read: "Full resource sovereignty. Road to socialism."

We are a socio-capitalistic country, problem is a full blown socialist structure would not work here, there are too many people who would just live off welfare rather than working. The majority of people in South-Africa is lazy, they are not hard working, they do not go the extra mile, they do not try improve themselves.

Mining would not be taken over officially by the government, its is better for the family of Mbeki and other officials to own a platinum mine making over a billion rand in profit annually, than to share it with their comrades.

Oh yes, I would like to see the government 'try' to nationalise international companies residing in UK. To this extent the companies have already been "nationalised," ie, their escape policy and done deals with government. They will continue to invest and continue to employ but the vast amount of money stays overseas and any threat to that would immediately see the SA economy crash. So dream on it will never happen unless this government wants Zimbabwe and no future. And Old Mutual for instance is no longer a SA company: for that matter neither is telkom; they may pay local taxes but their primary listings are overseas and it is there they seek investors and 'upkeep' any international image of this country. So no, the examples are not the same. Chavez may gamble with his oil revenue but it is hardly a gamble is it? Not the same when discussing gold or primary investment in this country.
 
Chavez is probably doing what is best for his country and the people of that country.
 
Sasol, which is our Golden Goose, is listed on the NYSE, aswell as JSE. The ANC/Goverment are unpredictable to say the least, but they are not that stupid!

They will never shoot the Goose that continues to lay their Golden mansions, luxury german cars and luxurious international holidays, and builds up those Swiss bank accounts!

What does make this interesting is that the USA imports almost as much oil from Venezuala as it does from Saudi. I wonder what the US goverment reaction to this will be?
 
While the rest of the world is privatizing everything, our country is doing all it can to hold on to public institutions. They are even planning to get more (Airlink for example).

These public companies are not performing well. Eskom, Telkom, SAA - all examples of failing badly organised businesses. The CEOs are all shamelessly awarding themselves bonuses and it is all quite sickening.

Have you noticed how many NGOs are lead by government/ANC cadres? All under control in one way or another ...

I wonder if they will now take the lottery into government hands.??

There's that never word again.

For example, if in 1995, I had said that Mugarbage would evict all the white farmers from the land and that inflation would go over 2000%, you would have said to me back then that that would NEVER happen. But it did.

If I had told a boerseun serving in the Army with me back in the early 80's that the ANC would take over, he would have shot me on the spot and over my dead body would have calmly said: "It will NEVER happen". But it did.

20 years ago if someone had said that Toyota would become the largest car manufacturer in the world and that GM would almost become bankrupt, they would have been told: "It will NEVER happen". But it did.

25 years ago if someone had said that the Soviet Union would collapse, someone would have said: "It will NEVER happen." But it did.

You get my point.

NEVER say NEVER.

It is just my prediction that most resources in SA will eventually become nationalized for the "good" of the masses of desperately poor South Africans.

We are now more free market orientated and capitalist in nature for the last 10 years as the Nats were socialists in their actions but could never admit that fact to themselves and their unquestioning supporters.

I thought the ANC always professed to be socialist party in the past, hence their alliance with the SACP and COSATU.

Seems to me that once some of their leaders got their hands on all that lovely moolah, it all of a sudden became convenient to embrace capatilism with open arms

Stupid article written by a nameless individual. It's onll 11 lines long, focusses on apartheid and social injustice and uses the word whites and white 7 times :eek:
