Johannesburg - After three armed robbers had, among other things, held an eight-month-old baby in the air and shook her, they fled, accidentally leaving behind a "manual for burglars".

The baby's mother, Riette Smith from Bassonia south of Johannesburg, said on Tuesday the notebook read like a "how to burgle a house" manual, and she had handed it to the police in the hope that it will help them apprehend the burglars.

The manual contained hand-written quotes from books by billionaires Richard Branson, Bill Gates and Donald Trump.

"Go for the money, reach for you goals," said one note, with a list of tips such as "if the people are nice, don't hurt the children. If the people are nasty (with you), kill them if you have to".

Robbers neatly dressed

The incident took place shortly after 09:00 on Friday. Smith was having a bath when she heard the gate opening. "I was expecting a client and thought it was him going to my office next to the house." She runs a graphic design and marketing business.

Three neatly-dressed robbers told Lizzie Rapakgadi, the domestic worker, that Dwayne, Smith's husband, had asked them for a quote for fitting new carpets.

Rapakgadi had just put Hannah, the baby, into her pram in order to show the men the rooms, when they produced firearms.

"The next moment they were inside my bathroom," said Smith.

"They told me to be quiet, and all I could do was stare. They handed me a towel and when I asked for a dressing gown, they brought it."

They undertook not to hurt the baby as long as I told them the whereabouts of the firearms and the safe, she said.

"I told them we don't own firearms. We also don't have a safe, which angered them."

Rapakgadi had to lie down on her stomach and was tied to the bed with neckties, while the men held Hannah. Smith pleaded with them to hand her the baby, but they also tied her (Smith) to the bed.

'They wanted to threaten me'

"They held Hannah up and shook her. It seemed as if they wanted to threaten me by doing this. I asked them to fetch a bottle for her, because I was afraid she would start crying. To my surprise they fetched a bottle and gave it to her."

After what felt like ages, they put Hannah on the floor just out of her reach and ransacked the house. They took jewellery, perfume, a plasma-screen television and keys. They then fled in Mr Smith's Mercedes CLS350, but dropped the booklet, Smith's wedding ring and purse.

Smith managed to untie herself, freed Rapakgadi and called for help.

The vehicle was tracked by Matrix about an hour later in Diepkloof, Soweto

A manual to burgle a house. :eek: Would really like to know what else is in there? Maybe a list of robberies they were planning to do?

Heard another story the other day of a house-owner shooting a robber dead. Good stuff.

Bet you that "manual" disappears, and the whole thing is written off as "yet another racist claim".

I read their books. haha. It inspired me to work harder and for different goals and reasons, inspired them to steal better. Amazing!

The hallmark of a good book is that different people can take different things away after reading it!

well now, i think it's time we (all potential victims) write a little manual of our own... how to torture would-be burglars, whilst waiting for the cops to arrive

hint & tips on how to avoid leaving any scars would be most helpful.

Torture is inhumane... besides, how do you torture someone who is suffering from severe high-speed lead poisoning?
 
The solution is just to level the playing field. Issue all men/women over the age of 21 with an automatic weapon which has to be carried with you at all times.

Never mind that outside of video games most people have never actually fired a gun but you'd like to arm them with automatic weapons?

It might be working for them but consider the fact that they are required to partake in national service, so not only are they armed but they are very well trained.
 
I believe the Swiss are given a gun when they leave the army?
 
I read about a town in America, which had a higher than average homicide rate, after a particularly brutal murder they made gun ownership mandatory for every resident, the rate dropped to 0 and they have had no homicides since, for 18 years so far. Sorry no link. Should be out there.
