Electricity - Soon a thing of the Past?

Is South Africa heading the way of Zimbabwe? It seems that every day brings new darkness to one or more suburbs.

All we hear are that "an investigation is under way" blah blah blah.

And this on the back of a host of other failures:
Bedfordview, Primrose, Cresta, Randburg - all in the last week.

What other ones have I missed? Feel free to post them here!

And, for those who will respond that this is all signs of a growing economy, you are most welcome to share your views too.
 
I reckon i'm going to pack my bags and go to Nam (nambia) at
least they have Wi-Max

hehe - I am considering moving house, but there is so much to consider:
1) Does it have ADSL
2) Does it have electricity
3) Does it have water
4) What is the crime rate like
5) Is it too close to a veld / informal settlement
6) Is it near a taxi rank?

Very valid points you mention there. I've really been thinking of making a move out of the country. But there it's terrorism (or as in the words of the great G Bush, terrr)

I don't know what to do anymore. I suppose one must just have faith and hope things wil get there. Besides, if i leave who's going to supports the chetaas.

These problems have been going on for years (not the lack of power but the blackouts anyway). In Roodepoort you were almost guaranteed a blackout once a week if not more.

Get gas, otherwise you might just freeze and starve to death this winter!!! Eskom are in more trouble than they publicly admit!!!

It has more water than RSA.

The crime is much lower. You are much less likely to be murdered there, as I recall it is safer than the USA. The USA is 7 times safer than RSA.
 
White yuppies are always complaining.

We have millions of poor people in SA, they get their electricity for free, and do you ever see them complaining? Nope.

Black people are always moaning about Apartheid and being black so I think we white yuppies have a right to complain if we want to.:rolleyes:

Eskom has been given the go-ahead to build quite a few new power stations, and to re-open the one that was mothballed in Komati - the others are in Limpopo and the Western Cape - these power stations will increase the country's capacity by some 7 500 MW.

Many of the municipalities have also now agreed that they will spend the 400 odd million rand to service and refurbish their networks, still you have a better chance of this happening in the larger metro municipalities than in the smaller ones -

Rustenburg municipality scored the lowest in a report by NERSA,
Tshwane was not too bad
Ekhuruleni on the other hand was quite dismal

So we can hope and pray that these matters will be sorted out soon.

But we have to be realistic, the sources of energy currently being used is finite, this is a worldwide problem, not a South African one, and the sooner Governments, and the large Oil and Coal conglomorates realise that we have to find alternative, renewable energy sources the better

Power stations are useless if you cant Distribute the power. Parallel tasks in upgrading the cable systems are needed. (as shown in Bedfordview recently) Pushing 100 Megawatts down a cable rated at 50Megawatts is a recipe for candles :D

South AfricaParts of Jhb back in the dark2007-5-10 16:52Johannesburg - Residents in different parts of Johannesburg were without electricity after a power outage on Thursday afternoon, said City Power.
Spokesperson Louis Pieterse said the outage occurred about 2.45pm.

It affected the Crosby, Mayfair, Homestead Park, Vrededorp, Brixton, Richmond, Parktown,parts of Auckland Park and Houghton areas.

"All these areas are experiencing a fairly big outage," said Pieterse.

Pieterse said City Power was attending to the outage, but could not say what had caused it.

"We are trying to identify the cause of the outage."

He said Thursday's outage was not linked to Wednesday's power outages in the Mayfair, Homestead Park, Westdene and Auckland Park areas.

Wednesday's outage was due to cable failure, he said.
